Today August 25, 2025, our country will celebrate National Heroes Day with the theme, "Isang Diwa, Isang Lahi, Isang Bayanihan" (One Spirit, One Race, One Bayanihan).

A regular non-working holiday celebrated every last Monday of August, National Heroes’ Day is a holiday with a rich history that has changed dates over the years. It was first introduced on 28 October 1931, during the American period through Act No. 3827, or β€œAn Act to Declare the Last Sunday of August of Every Year as an Official Holiday to be Known as the National Heroes Day.”
Lasting only for eleven years because during the Japanese interregnum, then-president Jose P. Laurel moved the date to coincide with Bonifacio Day, 30 November. It would not be for long, as former President Quirino would revert the date back to the last Sunday of August, by virtue of Administrative Order No. 190, series of 1952, after the second World War. This would be the norm for decades to come, that is, until the year 2007, wherein then-president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo would sign Republic Act No. 9492, which would move National Heroes Day to the last Monday of August.
While it is given that the likes of Dr. Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio, GomBurZa, and Apolinario Mabini will be celebrated on this day, we must remember that heroes are not confined to a specific period in our nation’s history. On National Heroes Day, we are called to celebrate the efforts of all, who have sacrificed their lives, both in the figurative and literal sense, in giving future generations of Filipinos a better tomorrow. Heroes need not only be those who fought in the Spanish, American, and Japanese wars, but those who have strived to be free from oppression, dictatorship and ensure that injustices do not occur. Everyday heroes too, must be given their flowers, as they are the unseen force that drive the Philippines into a better tomorrow, where the hopes and dreams of the youth may come into fruition.
