NEWS UPDATE: Contractor Curlee Discaya has alleged that after securing government contracts for flood control projects, several officials from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and lawmakers demanded kickbacks.

Discaya claimed that the supposed “cut” typically started at 10 percent of the contract value, and in some cases, reached up to 25 percent. He said the payments were made in cash and documented through vouchers and ledgers.

Sobrang gulo na ng issue between Awra Briguela and Sir Jack Gaming. What started as a clear case of homophobic remarks turned into a back-and-forth na parang naging laban ng LGBTQ community at PWD community. And honestly, sayang. Kasi we missed the chance to educate and elevate the conversation.

Yes, malinaw na mali yung sinabi ni Jack. Disrespectful. Homophobic. Walang lugar dapat yan online or anywhere. Pero mali rin na bumawi si Awra or yung iba by making fun of Jack’s disability. Hindi porket nauna siyang nang-discriminate, okay na na gantihan ng isa pang uri ng diskriminasyon.

I get it. Tao lang. Nasaktan. Galit. Pero hindi natin pwedeng itama ang isang mali gamit ang isa pang mali. Discrimination is discrimination, whether it’s about someone’s gender identity or disability. Walang mas mataas o mas mababang uri ng pangungutya.

We could’ve taken this chance to talk about how words hurt. About how influencers should be more responsible with their platforms. About why it’s important to be allies who call out hate without spreading more of it. About the importance of passing the SOGIE bill.

Respeto dapat ang pinaguusapan dito. Hindi patalbugan ng panlalait. Hindi paglalaban-laban ng marginalized sectors. Lahat tayo may laban. Pero mas malakas dapat ang boses kapag magkasama sa layunin, hindi nag-aaway sa comment section.

Let’s do better next time. Hindi para kay Awra. Hindi para kay Sir Jack. Para sa lahat ng nanonood, lalo na sa mga batang LGBTQ at PWD na naghahanap lang ng konting pag-asa na this world can be kind.
