Fun facts about Sealions
🦭 1. They have external ears
Sea lions have visible external ear flaps, unlike true seals, which have just tiny holes. That’s a key way to tell them apart!
🚶 2. They can walk on land
Thanks to rotatable back flippers, sea lions can actually "walk" or even run on land, unlike true seals which wiggle on their bellies.
💨 3. Fast and agile swimmers
Sea lions can swim up to 25 miles per hour (40 km/h) using their strong front flippers like wings.
🗣 4. Super vocal
Sea lions are known for being very loud—they bark, growl, and honk to communicate. Males especially use vocalizations to defend territory.
🧠 5. Highly intelligent
They're often trained for performances because they’re smart, curious, and capable of learning complex tasks. The sea lion in your photo might be part of a show!
🍼 6. Strong mother-pup bonds
Sea lion moms recognize their pups by voice and smell, even in huge colonies with thousands of other pups around.
🧊 7. Cold water champions
Their thick layer of blubber keeps them warm in cold ocean water, and they can hold their breath for up to 20 minutes when diving.
