The U.P. Visayas College of Management (UPV - CM) inaugurated the new Bluechips Learning Hub and Green Room at the New CM Building, UPV Iloilo City Campus on December 9, 2025.

Motivated by their desire to give back to UP, the UPV Bluechips Class of 1985โ€”led by co-chairs Amy Gillera Young and Jenny Juansing Bangayan, came up with the idea of donating something that CM students have โ€œnever seen before,โ€ giving rise to what is now known as the CM85 Bluechips Learning Hub.

With the support of their batchmates based locally and abroad, the class was able to conceptualize and fund the creation of a space inspired by Bangayanโ€™s visit to a modern Finnish public library.

The design brought to life by Architect Christopher Bangayan intends to provide students with a comfortable environment to study, collaborate, and create.

The Learning Hub will be open daily starting at 8 a.m., with air-conditioning available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and possible extensions during exam weeks.

The Green Room feature of the hub, intended for video lectures, competition meetings, content creation, and small-group discussions, will operate strictly by appointment through the Office of the Dean.

CM Dean Christopher Honorario emphasized the responsible use of the facilities, noting that books and additional learning resources will soon be placed in the hub.

Honorario described the project as a generous alumni contribution meant to benefit not only the current cohort but many batches to come, adding, โ€œI hope that future generations will also give back for the love of UP.โ€

He also expressed deep appreciation to Class โ€™85, saying the project aligns with their Jubilee theme, โ€œHonoring our past, investing in our future,โ€ and reflects the batchโ€™s recognition of what UP has given them.

As the donors of the hub, Batch โ€™85 alumni hope that their legacy project encourages both the students and fellow alumni to continue supporting the college.

They also expressed their wish for a growing tradition of alumni-led initiatives, challenging future batches to โ€œdo moreโ€โ€”whether by expanding the facility, adding new rooms, or undertaking larger legacy projects for the College of Management.

The hubโ€™s inauguration was attended by members of Batch โ€™85, Chancellor Clement Camposano, Prof. Lisa Baliao of the Office of Alumni Relations, representatives from the U.P. Alumni Associationโ€“Iloilo Chapter, the College of Management Student Council (CMSC), and members of the CM faculty, staff, and student body.

UP Visayas College of Management Student Council (UPV CMSC) has officially appointed Carl Joshua โ€œZhackieโ€ Chicano as its new Vice Chairperson for External Affairs (VCE) on Sunday, December 21, at the UPV CMSC page.

The selection started on November 21 and consisted of a series of assessments to ensure Chicanoโ€™s commitment and readiness for the position as the sole applicant for the VCE position.

The process included a closed-door interview with the council on December 10, and the appointment was finalized on December 20 in an emergency meeting where Chicano garnered unanimous votes during the deliberation.

Following his appointment, Chicano emphasized the importance of the community in his leadership approach.

โ€œServing in the council for 13 years has taught me that leadership is rooted in genuine service to the community,โ€ he said.

As the VCE, Chicano aims to strengthen partnerships with college organizations such as the Junior Executive Society (JES), to which he also serves as an external officer, and cited programs such as Artisan Rise as possible points of collaboration.

When asked about his plans for the Business Leadersโ€™ Summit, Chicano pointed out that the time and logistics at hand make mounting the event quite difficult and instead plans on diffusing the BLS into collaborative ventures with local and non-government organizations, incorporating aspects of the BLS into smaller activities such as school-to-school campaigns.

With the VCE position now filled, Chicano looks forward to creating external opportunities that cultivate skills and promote growth through outreach- and service-centered initiatives.

MIAGAO โ€” Amid finals week, the students, faculty members, and staff of the College of Management (CM) assembled at the CMM Grounds, UP Visayas Miagao Campus on Tuesday, December 17, marking their presence in the highlight of the Paskua 2025 festivities with the theme "Paglaum nga Nagapadayon."

The activities, though festive in nature, stayed grounded in the social realities the country is facing such as systemic corruption, rising costs of living, low wages, and shared struggles within the UPV community.

With barely an hour left before the Lantern Parade, CMโ€™s big lantern was put together despite last-minute repairs after it was damaged in transit from the Iloilo City Campus.

The big lantern design featured a symbolic noche buena basket โ€” a jab at the Department of Trade and Industryโ€™s proposed PHP 500 noche buena budget that demystifies the spirit of the feast in every household by reducing it into a mere economic exercise in cost-cutting that neglects the broader issues surrounding the rising cost of living faced by Filipino families.

As the parade reached its endpoint, the CM dance parade student performers took the floor and delivered the collegeโ€™s Paskua cheer that clinched them third place in the cheering competition.

The college also joined the Christmas Sing & Dance competitions alongside other UPV colleges and administrative offices where it depicted pressing national and local issues, including SMโ€™s privatization of the Iloilo Terminal Market and the ongoing flood control corruption scandal.

Between competition segments, dinner was shared across the venue as part of the annual Paskua tradition, providing students and faculty from different colleges a brief communal pause to break the ice and bond together.

Despite academic pressure and logistical challenges, the College of Management maintained an active presence throughout Paskua 2025, with participation marked by collective effort, coordinated performance, and shared celebration within the UP Visayas community.

In light of the recently held 3rd tournament board meeting of the University Student Council (USC) for the 2026 Pahampang, Bluechipsโ€”the academic organization representing the College of Management (CM)โ€”was once again prompted to justify its existence to the board, against a motion to dissolve it. The proponents cited the significant increase in population and claimed that each degree now has sufficient manpower to operate as a stand-alone group for the upcoming sports fest. This disregards the lived experiences of CM students following the CM transfer, which go beyond the need for additional hands.

CM has undergone numerous adjustments in response to the abrupt nature of the transfer, exposing the college to new realities: split campuses, limited student spaces, lodging concerns, and, most importantly, additional financial burden.

These challenges intensify during the Pahampang season due to limited practice areas in the Iloilo City and Miag-ao campuses, exhausting inter-campus travel, and overworked committees striving to keep the college afloat and equally competitive. This combined burden reduces student participationโ€”an issue the student body has worked tirelessly to overcome. Thus, the merger remains a practical solution devised by the governors to maximize manpower and conserve resources among the three degree programs.

The establishment of Bluechips as an academic organization goes beyond achieving higher placements in future Pahampang events. It is the product of past generations of governors who consciously facilitated the merger in response to real logistical challenges that would otherwise be crippling if the three academic organizationsโ€”Tycoons, Magnates, and Scionsโ€”remained independent. Defending its existence has never been an easy task, even to this day.

Breaking Bluechips apart under these circumstances is not only anti-student; it reinforces the expectation that students must repeatedly justify their own narratives and explain why CM stands at a disadvantaged footing to begin with. It forces governors and coordinators to defend a well-established solution instead of focusing on meaningful preparation for Pahampang, adding unnecessary work just to make ends meet.

It should be emphasized that the College of Management is part of UP Visayas and is not exempt from the struggles of a single community striving for honor, excellence, and service in both academics and sports. Calling for the dissolution of Bluechips undermines the very purpose of ๐—ฃ๐—ฎ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ดโ€”๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฒ, ๐˜€๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜๐˜€๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜€๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ฝ, ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—น๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ ๐—ฒ๐—ณ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜ across all academic organizations. It would divide students instead of uniting them, turning what should be a celebration of sportsmanship into an unnecessary battleground over bureaucracy. The struggles faced by CM are unique and call for understanding, solidarity, and empathy.

As iskolars ng bayan, students' efforts to push for equality and improvements in major school events such as Pahampang should not sow division among student organizations but instead foster unity and understanding of the varied circumstances each one faces. The challenge to the tournament board remains: How can they stage a sports event without compromising or undermining each academic organizationโ€™s representation and right to organize in a way that prioritizes student welfare?
