This Writersโ€™ Rights Day, we celebrate the voices behind the pages and the ideas that shape our world.

As Shepard Fairey reminds us: โ€œCopyright law was created not to stifle creativity but to encourage creativity.โ€

Behind every novel, poem, script, article, and post you read is a person whose work deserves proper acknowledgement, fair compensation, and strong copyright protection. Let us stand with writers and advocate for their rights.

Today, June 7, 2026 - The University of San Agustin (USA) held its Commencement Exercise for the Academic Year 2025-2026 on Sunday afternoon, Jun 7, 2026, at the Iloilo Convention Center. A total of 1,150 candidates received their degrees from successfully accomplishing their Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Requirements. Across four colleges - the College of Law (COL), the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLASE), the College of Business (COB), and the College of Technology (COT), marking another chapter in the universityโ€™s storied tradition of upholding academic excellence rooted in Agustininan Values.

The ceremony opened with an Invocation led by Rev. Fr. Glenn A. Macorol, OSA, followed by the singing of the National Anthem and the Agustinian Hymn.

This yearโ€™s commencement speaker was delivered by Engineer Rowan R. Helonga, a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering graduate of the University of San Agustin, Class of 1988. A distinguished alumnus, Engr. Helonga holds a Masterโ€™s degree in Business Administration from the International Academy of Management Economics, a Masterโ€™s degree in Agricultural Culture majoring in Agribusiness from Western Visayas State University, a Postgraduate Diploma in Packaging and Technology from the Central Philippine University, and fellowships granted by the Swine Burn Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Australia, and the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia.

As an alumni, he was honored to be part of the special occasion. Engr. Helonga opened his address with heartfelt words: โ€ In his speech, he acknowledged the diverse journeys of the graduating class. From students who balanced studies with work and family obligations, to those who quietly battled anxiety and self-doubt, to those who hailed from remote barangays and island communities across Western Visayas and beyond.

He even told the graduates that It reflects that success is never entirely personal, it is always social. And that there will always be somebody who made that success possible. He even added the concept of VUCA World - defined as Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity. Engr. Helonga challenged graduates that after this, life won't be any less easy. He is teaching them to face a rapidly changing landscape shaped by artificial intelligence and technological transformation with courage and adaptability.

Central to his address was the Universityโ€™s guiding motto, Virtus et Scientia. He explained that โ€œScience without virtue can lead to progress without purpose. Virtue without knowledge or science can lead to good intentions without impact. Your task as graduates is not to choose between virtue and science, but to unite them in service of humanity.โ€ It reminds us that true progress is not measured by what we can achieve, but by the wisdom and integrity with which we choose to act.

Closing his message, Engr. A huge congratulations to our very own Manangs and Manongs. The Ledger Publication family is beyond grateful for the beautiful memories we shared. We would never have achieved this level of unity without you. From capturing every scenario and reporting every major update, to adding a touch of artistry, dedication, and integrity to every story we publishedโ€”all while keeping our finances secureโ€”you have been our backbone.

Because of your immense contributions, the Ledger Publication truly made its mark this academic year. Though you are stepping out of the newsroom today, the stories you wrote, the moments you captured, and the art you brought to life will forever remain our truth.

The program commenced with an inspiring welcome address from COB Dean Marivis Gangoso. Following her remarks, guest speaker Karen Mae P. Villegasโ€”a Tourism and Hospitality Management alumnaโ€”delivered a moving message to the graduates. โ€œGreat transformations often begin with small acts of courage, kindness, and service,โ€ Villegas shared. โ€œWherever your dreams take you, carry the Augustinian spirit with you.โ€

The ceremony proceeded with the symbolic hooding of the 405 candidates, distributed across the following programs:

An awarding ceremony immediately followed, where outstanding students received medals and certificates for their academic and extra-curricular excellence. The venue filled with bright smiles as proud parents posed for cameras alongside their children.

Batch Valedictorian Mary Cathlene J. Lim then took the stage, delivering a powerful valedictory address that brought both laughter and tears to the grand ballroom. โ€œShow up at your 100%, show up at your 50%, show up at your 1%, and on the days that you can offer 0%, show up anyway," Lim urged her peers. "Allow yourself to make mistakes, allow yourself to fail, allow yourself to be imperfect and uncertain. You donโ€™t have to prove anything to anyone to call yourself successful.โ€

The celebration concluded on an emotional note as the Class of 2026 sang their graduation song and handed personal letters of gratitude to their parents and loved ones.

Once, crocodiles lived in shallowness
settling for the less of their living nest
but then, they slowly learned human wordsโ€”
greed that never rests, power that devours,
and gold that deceives.

Consumed by the desire to reign,
to rule, the goal became more in vain,
plans were carved into law,
decisions hardened into reality:
their ego aimed for the vast ocean.

A risky step, for them it was a prize,
the hunger for control seen in their eyes;
shameless intentions grew in surge,
their mischief left a trace on the surface of the earth.

The sea, once intoxicated and full of life,
innocent creatures suffer every sunrise and fall of night,
divided they become, equality fell apart,
fairness collapsed into silence,
and fauna scarredโ€”
forgot what peace and justice meant.

But they forgot where they truly belong,
souls like theirs drift where the abyss lies,
the audacity to claim what they don't deserveโ€”
becomes the very ruin they are.
