JIUFEN OLD STREET 🏮 | Ruifang District, New Taipei City, Taiwan

Jiufen used to be a quiet gold mining town in the mountains. Now its narrow stone stairways are strung with row after row of red lanterns, and every turn spills into another alley of tea houses, snack stalls, and shops stacked one on top of the other. We climbed the steps slowly. One tea house along the way is popularly said to have inspired the bathhouse in Spirited Away, though Studio Ghibli has never officially confirmed it. True or not, standing under its red banner as the sun dropped over the coast felt like something out of a film. 🍵

We snacked our way through the alleys, grabbed nougat from Brother Ox, and ended the walk with the sea and mountains stretched out below us, glowing gold at sunset. Jiufen is steep, crowded, and completely worth every step. 🌇

SHIFEN OLD STREET AND SKY LANTERNS 🏮 | Pingxi District, New Taipei City, Taiwan

Shifen Old Street sits along an active railway line built by the Japanese in 1918 to transport coal through the mountains. The coal is long gone but the tracks remain, and today people come from all over the world to stand on them and send their wishes into the sky. We wrote ours across every panel of our lantern: 福禄寿 (fú lù shòu), prosperity, status and wealth, and longevity, growth, more blessings, long life, successful career, health, and college success for the whole family. Then we let it go and watched it rise. That moment never gets old. 🏮

After the lanterns, we wandered the old street. Black pork sausage sizzling on the grill, pork and vegetable rolls dusted with chili and sesame, the real train rumbling through the crowd. Shifen is chaotic and charming and completely unforgettable. 🍢

SUN MOON LAKE 🌊 | Nantou County, Taiwan

Taiwan’s largest lake gets its name from its shape. The eastern shore resembles a sun, the western side a crescent moon. Surrounded by misty green mountains and home to the indigenous Thao people, Sun Moon Lake is one of Taiwan’s most treasured destinations. We took a boat ride across its calm waters, walked the lakeside streets of Ita Thao, and stopped to try the food that makes this place even more special. Wild boar on the grill, sausages, millet wine, indigenous skewers, and yes even ice cream by the lake. Even on a cloudy day, the beauty here is undeniable. Some places don’t need sunshine to shine. 🌊🏔️🍢

FENG CHIA NIGHT MARKET 🍢 | Taichung, Taiwan

Feng Chia Night Market is one of Taiwan’s biggest and most famous night markets, and every turn brings something sizzling, steaming, or impossible to resist. We tried a lot. Grilled oysters topped with chili and green onions, Taiwanese sausage stuffed in sticky rice (大腸包小腸), stinky tofu with pickled cabbage, tri-color sweet potato balls, comforting noodle soup, and even fresh salmon sashimi right on the street. Yes, street side. Only in Taiwan! 🇹🇼

Come hungry. Leave happy.

ZHONGSHE FLOWER MARKET 🌸

Zhongshe Flower Market spreads over six hectares of color, fragrance, and pure joy. Tulips, sunflowers, lilies, celosia, impatiens, gerbera daisies, all blooming together against the backdrop of Taichung’s mountains. It is the kind of place that makes you stop, breathe slowly, and take in the beauty of God’s creation. 🌸🌻🌷

RAINBOW VILLAGE | Taichung, Taiwan

Rainbow Village was the home of Huang Yung-Fu, a former soldier who fled to Taiwan after the Chinese Civil War. When the government planned to demolish his village, he picked up a brush and started painting. First a small bird, then cats, people, and whimsical creatures spilling across every wall. His colorful world went viral, students petitioned to save it, and the city turned it into a public park. One old man’s quiet, daily act of painting saved his home and now brings joy to millions. “Rainbow Grandpa” passed away in January 2024 at age 101, leaving behind a beautiful reminder that one person and one small act of love can change everything.

Step through those wooden cross doors and the world grows quiet. Inside the Immaculate Conception Chapel at Fu Jen Catholic University, East meets faith in the most unexpected way, mosaics of Pentecost glow at the altar, wire murals trace the Stations of the Cross across entire walls, the Good Shepherd tends His flock, and the Sower casts his seed over rolling hills. Outside, a stone monument bears Fu Jen’s four-word soul: 真善美聖 : Truth, Goodness, Beauty, Holiness.
