VIRAC, Philippines (Asia Pacific News) — Super Typhoon Uwan, internationally known as Fung-wong, intensified further early Sunday, 9 November 2025, as it barreled toward the Bicol region, packing maximum sustained winds of 165 km/h (103 mph) and gusts up to 205 km/h (127 mph), the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said.
At 1 a.m., the eye was centered 370 km (230 miles) east of Virac, Catanduanes, moving west-northwest at 35 km/h (22 mph), PAGASA reported in a bulletin issued at 2 a.m.
The agency raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 4 — indicating typhoon-force winds of 118-184 km/h (73-114 mph) within 12 hours — over Catanduanes, southeastern Camarines Norte, eastern Camarines Sur and eastern Albay. Signal No. 3, signaling storm-force winds of 89-117 km/h (55-73 mph) within 18 hours, covers much of central and southern Luzon, including Metro Manila, and parts of the northern Visayas.
Signal No. 2 is in effect across northern Luzon and additional Visayas provinces, while Signal No. 1 extends to Batanes and parts of Mindanao.
PAGASA warned the storm could reach super typhoon strength Sunday and make landfall in Aurora province late Sunday or early Monday, though a direct hit on Catanduanes remains possible. After crossing northern Luzon’s mountains, it is expected to emerge over Lingayen Gulf Monday morning.
A storm surge exceeding 3 meters (10 feet) threatens low-lying coastal areas from Cagayan to Sorsogon and parts of the Visayas and Mindanao over the next 48 hours. Gale warnings are posted for seaboard areas, with waves up to 14 meters (46 feet) forecast off Catanduanes and Aurora.
Residents in high-risk zones should follow local evacuation orders, authorities said. The next bulletin is due at 5 a.m., 9 November 2025.
