Mangroves are the only trees that thrive in salty, coastal waters — creating a vital habitat where land meets sea. They protect coastlines from erosion, serve as nurseries for 75% of tropical fish species, and store up to 10 times more carbon than terrestrial forests. 🌊🐟

𝓜𝓪𝓷𝓰𝓻𝓸𝓿𝓮𝓼 𝓪𝓻𝓮 𝓸𝓾𝓻 𝓷𝓪𝓽𝓾𝓻𝓪𝓵 𝓼𝓱𝓲𝓮𝓵𝓭𝓼—protecting us from storm surges, typhoons, and rising seas. They’re not just trees, they’re life-saving ecosystems.

𝓑𝓾𝓽 𝓶𝓪𝓷𝓰𝓻𝓸𝓿𝓮𝓼 𝓪𝓻𝓮 𝓾𝓷𝓭𝓮𝓻 𝓽𝓱𝓻𝓮𝓪𝓽.
Over 35% of global mangrove forests have been lost in just a few decades — cleared for aquaculture, urban development, and tourism. Climate change and pollution only accelerate the damage.

𝓦𝓱𝓪𝓽 𝓬𝓪𝓷 𝔀𝓮 𝓭𝓸?
• Support and join local mangrove planting efforts
• Promote sustainable coastal development
• Raise awareness about their role in fighting climate change
• Reduce single-use plastic waste that ends up in coastal zones

Today, we celebrate the ᴡᴏʀʟᴅ ᴍᴀɴɢʀᴏᴠᴇ ᴅᴀʏ, officially known as the ɪɴᴛᴇʀɴᴀᴛɪᴏɴᴀʟ ᴅᴀʏ ꜰᴏʀ ᴛʜᴇ ᴄᴏɴꜱᴇʀᴠᴀᴛɪᴏɴ ᴏꜰ ᴛʜᴇ ᴍᴀɴɢʀᴏᴠᴇ ᴇᴄᴏꜱʏꜱᴛᴇᴍ. It was established by UNESCO in 2015 to raise awareness about the importance of mangrove ecosystems and the urgent need to protect them. 🌍 Let’s stand for mangroves by committing to conserve, restore, and protect these vital coastal ecosystems.

Forged in the spirit of excellence and leadership, the Trident is more than just a symbol—it is a legacy. Bestowed only upon those who embody trailblazing brilliance and academic distinction, the Trident Award honors individuals who have not only mastered their craft but have shaped currents, transforming tides into pathways of progress.

A very special day to one of our magnificent giants of the Sea!

𝓦𝓸𝓻𝓵𝓭 𝓞𝓻𝓬𝓪 𝓓𝓪𝔂 is finally here! On this day, we celebrate and honor our Orcas as they are bear the heavy weight of being both the keystone species, and indicator species in our marine ecosystems. To play a major role in balancing out the ecosystem and be an indicator of a healthy ecosystem are the most vital contributions of Orcas.

With approximately 50,000 killer whales, Orcas are now considered endangered species. Moreover, they are also umbrella species, making it ideal to protect them. Through this, other species in the ecosystem can alse be well-protected and further contribute to a healthier marine ecosystem.

As this day comes to a close, may we be be reminded that we, humans, are also like these underwater giants that need love and care to further nurture and grow.

FUN FACT! 🤓👆

Sharks are actually not hostile to humans! Being considered prehistoric animals, sharks have been evolving for millions of years — long before humans even existed. 🤔 Therefore, we are not part of their diet! ❌️ Sharks are generally curious and would only attack humans if they are confused, making shark attacks to humans a rare occurrence.

In fact, more people are killed worldwide every year by elephants, crocodiles, bees, wasps, and even coconuts than sharks!

Let us stop the misinformation and give love to our prehistoric grumpy-looking underwater neighbor! Happy Shark Awareness Day! 🦈💙💛

The UP Fisheries Guild proudly congratulates our graduates of 2025— who braved against the years of relentless currents, and ultimately ascended with a banner raised against the odds. Navigating unpredictable realms can never be seamless, thus, turning such long trials into triumphs are legacies worth celebrating. For they quote that hardwork will never indeed betray you, we have witnessed the set off of the echoes of your ballads of perseverance across oceans unbounded.

Throughout those years of selfless service, the organization is honored and greatly proud to have served and uplifted the fisheries sector with you. Hearts aflame the arcane guides, as destiny’s course, we boldly stride! ⚙️

In the shifting tides of service and struggle, the UP Fisheries Guild stands not as mere witnesses to the plight of the fisheries sector but as active bearers of its hope. To serve the fisherfolk is not a choice we stumbled upon; it is a calling carved deep into the foundation of our organization. In a nation shaped by water, the fisheries profession is its undercurrent, unseen by many, but carrying the weight of survival for millions.

With great pride, we announce that the UP Fisheries Guild is this year’s 𝐌𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐎𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 in the University of the Philippines Visayas. We have been honored with two of the highest distinctions conferred upon student organizations: the 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐫’𝐬 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐔𝐏𝐕 𝐌𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐎𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 and the 𝐃𝐫. 𝐀𝐝𝐨𝐥𝐟𝐨 𝐁. 𝐁𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐨 𝐔𝐏𝐕 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 for 𝐌𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐎𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 for the academic year 2024–2025 during the Papuri 2025.

From the very beginning, we have stood as a socio-academic, service, and political organization, not in name alone, but in relentless action shaped by purpose, compassion, and conviction. Every project we initiate, every partnership we nurture, and every fisherfolk struggle we stand with echoes the values that define who we are and why we serve.

Our strength lies not in prestige but in our people. It lies in every resident FGian and alumnus who lives out our principles, every sponsor and partner organization that walks alongside us. This recognition is made possible through the unwavering support and guidance of our adviser Ma’am Iris Ann Borlongan and co-adviser Ma’am Karmelie Jane Monaya, the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, the University of the Philippines Visayas, and most especially to our partner communities who remain the soul of our advocacy and the compass of our collective purpose.

In a world constantly shifting, the organization’s fire stays alight. No storm can dim the anima that burns within. We move forward, not for the titles we bear, but for the communities we stand with, the fisherfolk we fight for, and the just future we continue to envision.

For the flame of the guild never lit for applause, it was lit and will remain burning for the people.

Celebrated annually on the 29th of June, 𝙄𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙁𝙞𝙨𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙣 𝘿𝙖𝙮 honors all fisherfolk around the globe who dedicate and risk their lives in traversing the uncertain tides to bring seafood to our plates.

For an archipelagic country, millions of Filipinos rely on the fisheries industry for food, as fish is an accessible and ideal source of protein and minerals. This, in turn, emphasizes how essential the roles of our Filipino fishermen are in contributing to our daily diet needs.

It already requires immense strength to withstand rough waves and tropical wraths, thus, further resiliency in an administration that overlooks the fisheries sector—particularly the municipal fisherfolks, should not be prolonged. Our small-scale fishermen continue to experience steep and unjust competitions with commercial fishing corporations within the 15-km municipal waters on a daily basis, despite the domain being legally reserved for the municipal fisherfolks.

On this International Fisherman Day, as we salute the heroes of our pelagic waters, our call for equity among Filipino fisherfolks and urgent priority to their sector remains steadfast and will not falter.

𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐲𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐫𝐚𝐰 𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐝𝐚!

Sa araw na ito, ginugunita natin ang Pambansang Araw ng Mangingisda alinsunod sa Presidential Proclamation No. 261, bilang pagkilala at pinakamataas na pagpupugay sa mga bayani ng ating karagatan, ang mga tunay na tagapangalaga ng ating baybaying tubig at yamang-dagat.

Bagamat sila ang pangunahing tagapagbigay ng seguridad sa pagkain, patuloy silang nahaharap sa mga hamon na naglalagay sa kanila sa mahirap na kalagayan, lalo na sa usapin ng karapatan at pangangalaga sa kanilang sariling nasasakupan.

Sa kanilang matibay na paninindigan para sa makatarungan at sustenableng pangangalaga ng munisipal na karagatan, ipinapamalas nila ang kanilang walang kupas na dedikasyon, hindi lamang para sa kanilang mga pamilya, kundi para sa masaganang kinabukasan ng buong bayan.

Ang ating pagpupugay sa mga tahimik na bayani ng bayan ay hindi magmamaliw. Ito ay simula pa lamang ng patuloy na pakikipaglaban para sa kanilang karapatan at dignidad.

Mataas na pagpupugay sa mga bayani ng ating karagatan! Mabuhay ang mga mangingisdang Pilipino! ✊🏼💙💛

𝐖𝐇𝐈𝐂𝐇 𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐓𝐋𝐄 𝐀𝐑𝐄 𝐘𝐎𝐔? 🐢

Humans and turtles have more common personalities than you can think. This 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐓𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓, we are giving them spotlight—not just for their personalities, but for their importance in our ocean ecosystems. Each species play a vital role in the ocean’s health, from tending to the coral reefs to traveling thousands of miles to nest.

Despite their wisdom and resilience, every single sea turtle species is threatened or endangered. By understanding their quirks, we can learn better how to protect them—from ocean pollution, bycatch, habitat loss, shrinking nesting grounds, and climate change.

So whether you’re a drained box turtle, or hawksbill diva explorer, we should remember that their survival is our responsibility. Because saving turtles isn’t just adorable—it’s essential!

In the symphony of life, every creature plays a note.

As we celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity, we resonate with the theme: "𝑯𝒂𝒓𝒎𝒐𝒏𝒚 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝑵𝒂𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑺𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝑫𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒍𝒐𝒑𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕." This year, we emphasize the crucial connection between the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. It’s a plea for collective action - involving governments and communities - to come together and save the environment. This special day reminds us that nature and progress don't have to be in conflict. True development respects and works with the environment.

From the endangered species such as hawksbill turtles that support the health of coral reefs, to manatees that maintain seagrass vitality, from mangroves safeguarding coastlines, every element in the ecosystem web plays a role in sustaining life, including ours.

We cannot reach the Sustainable Development Goals without safeguarding biodiversity. We cannot live in harmony with nature without listening to what it needs.

Their survival is tied to ours. Let us protect what protects us!
