AB English Language Students Explore Career Path in Virtual Assistance

Bachelor of Arts in English Language students recently participated in an informative and inspiring seminar focused on Virtual Assistance, where they gained valuable insights into one of today’s most in-demand digital careers. The event was held on May 22 at the CAS Building Room 10 and featured expert speakers who covered both the professional and personal aspects of working as a VA.

Prof. Ryan Floyd Sorolla opened the session with a talk on the importance of proper attire in professional settings. He explained the differences between casual and formal dress codes and their relevance even in virtual environments. “Your outfit may seem like a small detail, but it influences how others perceive your work ethic,” he said. “Dressing appropriately is part of building your professional image.”

Following him, Prof. Angelie Joy Bulquerin discussed the core of Virtual Assistance. She explained the roles and responsibilities of a VA, emphasizing skills such as communication, organization, and adaptability. “Being a Virtual Assistant means becoming a reliable partner to clients from different parts of the world,” she explained. “It’s a role that demands both independence and professionalism.”

The highlight of the seminar was the talk by Ms. Sarah Vasquez, an experienced Virtual Assistant who shared her personal journey in the field. She spoke candidly about her challenges, the skills she developed, and the rewards that come with the job. Her story served as motivation for many students, especially those considering flexible and remote career options. “Start where you are, use what you have, and never stop learning,” she encouraged.

The seminar left a strong impression on the attendees, offering both practical guidance and real-life inspiration. As the digital world continues to grow, English Language students are now more aware of the opportunities that lie ahead in the virtual workplace.

The English Linguists in Our Society (ELIOS) Officers successfully organized the first-ever Linguists’ Fun Day with the theme "The Community as a Canvas: Bridging Voices, Sparking Joy, and Unveiling Potential", March 12 at the University Gymnasium.

The event opened in the morning with a solemn and patriotic atmosphere as attendees sang the National Anthem and the NISU Hymn, followed by a heartfelt prayer led by April Joy A. Bautista of ABEL 4-A.

Prof. Glenn Grace B. Bayhon, ABEL Chairperson, warmly welcomed the participants, setting the stage for an exciting and meaningful day.

Dr. Edna T. Suganob, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, then captivated the audience with the parable of the pencil, a thought-provoking story that reminded students of their potential, resilience, and the importance of continuous learning.

The highlight of the morning session was an insightful discussion by Mr. John Dean G. Rogales, who delved into radio broadcasting and its key components. His talk covered essential topics such as scriptwriting, anchors and news presenters, infomercials, technical applications, common mistakes in radio broadcasting, and commonly mispronounced words in the field. The excitement continued in the afternoon with interactive games that encouraged teamwork and friendly competition among students. Laughter and cheers filled the gymnasium as participants showcased their agility and quick thinking in various challenges.

CAS Filmmakers once again showed excellence as they won the championship in the recently concluded "Mga Pangandoy sa Lawod: Short Film Making Contest," organized by the Office of Municipal Agriculture - Estancia, last Friday, January 31, 2025, at the NISU Mini Theatre.

The winning entry, titled "Balud sa Palad," tells the story of a student living with his ailing grandmother in a coastal area. Due to poverty, he was forced to prioritize his fishing livelihood over education. The conflict arises during the Visayan Sea Closed Season Period, which prevents him from fishing in the ocean. He discovers a solution when, unexpectedly, he becomes a tour guide after several tourists are left behind by their boat service. Due to his exemplary work, an organization is established, allowing fishermen to work as tour guides during the closed season as an alternative source of income.

The filmmakers of the short film are AB English Language 4-B students under the supervision of Prof. Ryan Floyd Sorolla; trusted and supported by Prof. Glenn Grace B. Bayhon, AB English Language Chairperson; and Dr. Edna T. Suganob, College Dean. Ruela Joy J. Amado, one of the writers, shared that money, resources, and time were their major struggles during the production. Nevertheless, she expressed gratitude, noting that their efforts paid off. "All in all, it was worth it. We made it," she declared.

Under Fisheries Administrative Order (FAO) No. 167-3, s. 2013, of the Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR), the Visayan Sea Closed Season Period is an annual event from November 15 to February 15 that seeks to protect and conserve small fish such as sardines and mackerel. This critical initiative allows them to spawn and replenish fish stocks during this period.
