Indeed, many Filipinos still have the misconception that mental illnesses are something to be ashamed of and that conditions such as depression and anxiety do not exist.

The said stigma prevents the nation from giving mental health enough attention. But, in recent years, a lot of people have persisted in fighting for it in hopes of increasing awareness and changing how others perceive it.

We ought to be able to openly discuss the mental health situation in the Philippines.

𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐖𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 ❗❗❗

Without a doubt, the Philippines is a developing country in desperate need of progress in order to provide interventions for mental health issues.

According to the article by Frontiers (2021), the definition of good mental health varies across cultures, values, and traditions.

As said by Eshun and Gurung (2009), culture influences how people manifest symptoms, express these symptoms, deal with psychological problems, and decide whether to seek care.

Given the stigma of Filipino beliefs that mental health issues are non-existent and something to be ashamed of, it has become a decade-old rusted chain of beliefs, and it may be one of the causes why people suffering from mental health illnesses tend to keep their thoughts and emotions to themselves rather than sharing them with those who should be their main source of courage.

Tanaka et al. (2018) discovered that the stigma is comprised of the following themes:

1. 𝗙𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺𝘀 - the family rejects or disowns the family member who suffers from a mental disorder as they believe that it can be inherited.

2. 𝗨𝗻𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗺 - the mentally ill either would certainly suffer from severe functional impairment or would be able to overcome any psychological suffering by themselves.

3. 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 - people without mental illnesses apply an acute illness model to those ill, and expect short term full recovery.

Furthermore, the World Health Organization (WHO) Assessment Instrument for Mental Health Systems (2007) states that the Philippine government does not provide financial support to organizations involved in the development and implementation of mental health policies and legislation.

As a result, mental illness has risen to become the Philippines' third most common disability. In addition, six million Filipinos suffer from depression and anxiety.

As reported by the Department of Health (DOH), 154 million Filipinos suffer from depression, 1 million from schizophrenia, and 15.3 million from substance use disorders in 2018, with 877,000 dying by su***de annually.

Put bluntly, the Philippines has mental health gaps that have gone unresolved for years, and they continue to press in the society. The stigma that has bound everyone in a rusted belief continues to ache our entire being.

Now, if you are reading this, open your mind and heart, look around you, and you will see the reality that we have chosen to ignore.

First, let us recall what is Mental Health?

It refers to an overall psychological well-being, and includes the way you feel about yourself, the quality of your relationships, and your ability to manage your feelings and deal with difficulties.

Here are ten tips to take care of your mental health:

1. Talk to someone you trust - talk to a friendly face. If you have concerns, stresses or worries, sharing these with someone who cares about you is one of the best ways to calm your nervous system and relieve stress.

2. Look after your physical health - taking care of your physical health helps improve your mental health and well-being. Be active for at least 30 minutes daily exercise — running, walking, yoga, dancing, cycling, or even gardening. Eat a balanced and healthy diet. Make sure to get enough sleep.

3. Do activities that you enjoy - try to continue doing the activities that you find meaningful and enjoyable, such as cooking for yourself or your loved ones, playing with your pet, walking in the park, reading a book, or watching a film or TV series.

4. Take two minutes to focus on the world around you - mindfulness, meditation, and deep breathing can help to reduce overall level of stress.

5. Steer away from harmful substances - do not use harmful substances such as drugs, alcohol, and to***co to cope with what you are feeling.

6. Don’t skimp on sleep - it matters more than you think. Sleep is our body and mind. It is the best way to recharge and rejuvenate our body and minds.

7. Eat healthy, regular meals, and stay hydrated - a balanced diet and plenty of water can help to improve your energy levels and focus throughout the day. Also, limit caffeinated beverages such as coffee and soft drinks.

8. Focus on positivity - identify and challenge your negative and unhelpful thoughts.

9. Stay active - staying active is good for the brain as it is for the body with having a regular exercise routine or actively can have a major impact on your mental and emotional health, relieve stress, improve memory, and help you to sleep better.

10. Seek professional help - reach out to a professional practitioner who can help you to provide emotional support, and practical help. Remember, you are not alone.
