Eiichiro Oda’s early character sketches for One Piece looked drastically different from what we know today. Aside from Luffy, Nami, Zoro, and Sanji, almost every major character went through major redesigns.

Franky was originally conceived as a spirit who magically repaired the ship. Robin looked like an older character with mechanical gear fitted to her head. Usopp’s early design was strikingly similar to Blackbeard, and Chopper didn’t have the cute appeal he eventually became famous for.

Looking back, it’s a good thing Oda reworked these concepts — the series might not have reached the same level of global success otherwise.
