This is the story of my eldest daughter, ramos!
After releasing the book a young woman from Australia with an incredible story of her own told me how much Richard Flaherty's story meant to her. Here is her story another Giant Killer!
- David A. Yuzuk Author of, "The Giant Killer."
"My name is Kat Ramos and I moved to Australia from the Philippines years ago in search of better opportunities. Being a person of short stature, there were very limited opportunities in my country and it was always hard to be seen as an equal.
I decided to pursue my Master’s degree in Information and soon after, I landed my first job at an Australian bank company named ANZ. Cyber Security became my passion and in my current role I work as an engineer in the Applications Security team.
People can definitely spot me in any ANZ building, walking along with project teams, discussing secure applications. Four feet tall (rounded up), I’m no different to anybody else really…it's just that you'll hear the yelling from below. At work the only difference between me and other colleagues is that I sometimes use a step-ladder to reach things like the hot water tap in the kitchen or just annoy randomly anyone in our team area to do the deed, if I feel like it. That’s the way it is – I don’t want special treatment.
Thinking back to when I left the Philippines, moving to a different country (so different in so many ways), of course, I was nervous to take that step. I remember it was sad to leave my family, but with their full support, I wouldn’t have had it any other way. I have realised that it’s the best decision I ever made. Australia is where I was offered my first permanent full-time job and ANZ is the organization that gave me this opportunity.
Archery is very close to my heart and I happen to be pretty good at it! I represented Australia and took part in the 2017 World Dwarf Games in Canada and, yep, I won gold in both the 9 and 18 meters category and broke the record considering it was my first competition in Archery.
One of my goals would be to compete in the Paralympics as I am hoping they will include a category for short-statured competitors in Archery. The goal doesn’t end there. I also want to encourage and inspire my fellow short-statured in the Philippines and be a role model for them. With social media, I would like to reach out to them and let them know that they can achieve a career as well as pursue their passion. My hope is that if they see a Filipina compete in a world level sporting event and have a professional career, they will also be encouraged to pursue their passion.
When opportunity comes, you might as well grab it. You’ll never know when it’s going to come again, and opportunities are the best ways to learn new things!" -Kat Ramos
