These words resonated throughout the room as Mr. Genesis Odejar, School Paper Adviser (SPA) of the Cadocian Light Journalism Club, encouraged aspiring student leaders during the clubโ€™s officer election on June 24, 2026. More than a reminder, his message challenged students to step out of their comfort zones and seize opportunities that could help them grow both as journalists and as individuals.

As the election unfolded, Mr. Odejar encouraged members not to let fear hold them back from pursuing leadership positions within the organization. Beyond inspiring students to become leaders, he also urged them to embrace the responsibilities and opportunities that come with being a journalist. Drawing from his own experiences, he emphasized that journalism requires courage, confidence, initiative, and a willingness to make oneโ€™s voice heard. โ€œWhen you are a journalist, being a coward shouldnโ€™t be in your vocabulary,โ€ he said.

By emphasizing the value of journalism, Mr. Odejar reminded students that their voices can make a difference when used with courage and purpose. His message served as a reminder that opportunities are meant to be seized, not feared. True to his words, it is often the chances we never takeโ€”not the failures we experienceโ€”that leave the deepest regrets.

Calambaโ€” To seek guidance and blessings of the Holy Spirit for the academic year, The Basic Education Department (BED) gathered for a Mass of the Holy Spirit at Calamba Doctorsโ€™ Collegeโ€™s (CDC) Dr. Juan A. Lagunzad Sports Arena on June 15.

Students, faculty members, administrators, and staff attended an 8:30 AM Mass presided by Rev. Fr. Marciano R. Dijan of the Parish of Immaculate Conception, Diocese of San Pablo, seeking divine guidance for the new school year.

During his homily, Rev. Fr. Dijan spoke on the true meaning of love, reminding the CDC community that genuine love expects nothing in return and is best expressed through kindness, understanding, and compassion. He then encouraged students to practice selfless service in their relationships and to commit their efforts to God.

Proceeding, the event featured the Liturgy of the Eucharist, where the community offered prayers and intentions for the school year, received Holy Communion, and took part in the solemn rites.

The mass concluded with a final blessing. The event highlighted the importance of faith, moral values, and community cooperation as the BED community begins another academic year.

On the second day of classes, June 9, 2026, the school conducted a fire drill to enhance emergency preparedness and educate students, faculty, and staff on appropriate response procedures during a fire incident. Calamba Doctorsโ€™ College ensures the defensive measures of their people by strengthening their knowledge and promoting scientific understanding regarding fire safety. The drill lecture was led by FO2 Elvin R. Mabanes from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) of Calamba City Fire Station. He discussed the chemistry of combustion, breaking of chemical reaction, various classes of fire, and types of fire extinguisher.

The fire drill began with a simple introduction on how combustion occurs due to a chemical reaction by the three elements of fire or the โ€œfire triangleโ€. It consists of enough heat in order for the temperature to rise to its ignition point, 16% of oxygen to sustain combustion, and any possible material that is capable of burning as fuel. The fires were also classified into five; Class A, B, C, D, and K. In the discussion, Class A fires involve ordinary combustible materials such as wood and clothes. Class B fires are caused by flammable liquids like gasoline, oil, and paint. Class C fires are due to electrical energized equipment and Class D fires are induced by combustible metals like aluminum, sodium, and magnesium. Lastly, Class K fires occur in kitchens and cooking environments usually caused by cooking oils and fats.

As the orientation progressed, FO2 Mabanes identified the designated fire exits around the building and explained the proper evacuation procedures to be followed in emergency situations. He discussed the different causes of fire such as electrical malfunction, improper handling of flammable materials, unattended cooking, faulty wiring, overloaded electrical outlets, gas leaks, careless disposal of cigarette butts, misuse of candles and open flames, overheating appliances, and failure to follow fire safety procedures. โ€œAs long as heat, fire, and oxygen are present and react with each other, it will cause a possible combustion.โ€ FO2 Elvin R. Mabanes said. He also explained the proper process in safety measures within school grounds to prevent further incidents and protect from possible respiratory diseases caused by smoke or carbon monoxide poisoning due to toxic smoke. The AREAHAโ€”Alarm, Response, Evacuate, Assemble, Headcount, and Evaluateโ€”a procedure that was discussed and should be followed by staff and students when facing an emergency fire incident.

The seminar highlighted the multiple types of fire extinguishers in order to distinguish which is suitable to use depending on the class of fire. First is the water fire extinguisher, which is commonly used for ordinary materials such as paper, wood, and cloth. The foam fire extinguisher was discussed as an effective option for fires involving flammable liquids. The dry chemical powder extinguisher was presented as a type that can be used for various classes of fire, including those involving electrical equipment. The carbon dioxide (COโ‚‚) fire extinguisher was identified as suitable for electrical fires and flammable liquids. Afterwards, Mabanes introduced the PASS method โ€”Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweepโ€”which is the standard technique in using the dry chemical or powdered type extinguisher. They encouraged students to participate in their drill by asking questions for interactions and to illustrate specific life-saving techniques such as stop, drop, and roll if your clothing catches on fire.

Following the lecture, the pupils and staff members conducted a fire drill simulation to test the schoolโ€™s readiness in case of an actual emergency. As the students lined up, they cautiously went downstairs to evacuate into the designated evacuation area of the school within the guidance of emergency personnel and faculty staff. A physical demonstration on how to properly use the ABC powder type fire extinguisher by Cadocians was held at the evacuated area with the guidance of BFP officers.

The conduct of the fire drill was a success by combining learning and experience at the same time to promote safety, preparedness, and responsible behavior among every Cadocian.
