The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) is the international standard that ensures reliable communication and rapid rescue in emergencies.
Every vessel carries critical equipment designed to keep crews safe and connected.
Key equipments include:
📻 VHF, MF/HF Radios – For voice, data, and digital distress alerts.
🛰️ EPIRB – Sends exact location signals to satellites worldwide.
🆘 SART – Radar beacon that guides rescuers straight to your position.
📰 NAVTEX & EGC – Receive vital weather warnings, navigational alerts, and safety messages automatically.
🔊 Two-Way VHF Radios – Portable units for on-board use and survival crafts.
🌊 GMDSS Sea Areas – Gear depends on where you sail:
• A1: VHF coverage (~20–30 NM from coast)
• A2: MF coverage (~100–150 NM, beyond A1)
• A3: Satellite coverage (70°N – 70°S)
• A4: Polar regions — outside all above zones
📌 Rules & Updates:
• Mandatory for all passenger ships & cargo ships ≥300 GT (international voyages)
• New rules effective Jan 1, 2024: Modernized tech added, obsolete systems removed
• Operators must hold a valid GMDSS Radio Operator License
