I came across an article saying that many Filipinos now consider becoming a Virtual Assistant their dream job.

Personally, I think we've reached a point where remote work is the real dream, not necessarily becoming a VA.

One of the biggest misconceptions today is that if you want to work from home, you have to become a Virtual Assistant. That's no longer true.

You can still be a:
• Engineer
• Accountant
• Graphic Designer
• Project Manager
• Recruiter
• Customer Success Manager
• Software Developer
• Marketer
• Business Analyst
• Technical Writer
• Architect
• Even a Sales or Operations professional
..and work remotely by finding the right company or client.

Another reality people should know is that the "easy six-figure VA income" everyone talked about a few years ago isn't as common today. The market has become much more competitive. There are more applicants than ever, clients are more selective, rates have been pushed down in many niches, and long-term clients can still be unpredictable.

The solution isn't simply becoming a VA, but how you become valuable.

Develop expertise that businesses are willing to pay for. Build a portfolio. Learn AI and automation. Improve your communication skills. Understand business processes. Become someone who solves problems instead of someone who only completes tasks.

Remote work isnt a profession but a work arrangement.

Don't abandon your profession just because you want to work from home. Instead, find ways to bring your existing skills into the global market.

The people who continue to earn well remotely aren't necessarily those with the title "Virtual Assistant." They're the ones who have built specialized skills that are difficult to replace.

Your edge isn't where you work. It's the value you bring.

Being a virtual assistant (VA) is now the top dream job among Filipinos, according to a study by digital financial services provider Remitly Global Inc..

The report, released on Tuesday, June 30, found that “virtual assistant” ranked as the most sought-after career in the Philippines based on Google searches for “how to be a…” or “how to become a…” in local languages from May 2025 to May 2026.

The findings mark a shift in career aspirations, with the VA role overtaking doctor as the country’s most desired profession.

A report from BBC highlighted how workers in the Philippines are being hired to manage conversations for OnlyFans creators, basically acting as the person behind the account and chatting with subscribers.

For many people trying to enter the remote work industry, jobs like this become one of the easiest entry points.

And honestly, we can’t easily blame them.
Breaking into remote work today is not as easy as many influencers make it sound.
Before landing a stable client, many beginners go through:

• endless job applications
• low offers
• trial tasks
• ghosted interviews

So when someone finally offers a job, even if the pay is only $2 per hour, some people take it just to gain experience or to start somewhere.

For others, it’s simply about paying the bills.

But situations like this also raise bigger concerns.

Extremely low pay can affect the reputation of Filipino freelancers and contribute to the race-to-the-bottom pricing in the global remote work market.

It also comes with personal and psychological challenges since the job involves maintaining intimate conversations while pretending to be someone else.

Still, the real issue here isn’t the workers.
It shows how hard it has become for many Filipinos to break into the remote work industry and find fair opportunities.

For some, these jobs are not the destination but a stepping stone toward better work.

🔥THE REAL REASON I PURSUED REMOTE WORK ➜ TO BE CLOSER TO MY FAMILY

👨‍👩‍👧Iba talaga 'pag pamilya mo na ang nagmo-motivate sa'yo para mag-shift ng career. Para sa trabahong walang stability, mahirap talaga sumugal pero pinagdasal namin ito at pinakinggan din kami.

🙏Sabi ko sa sarili ko dati, ok muna ang 25 hours per week na online work,
⭐Pero biniyayaan ako ng 40 hours.

🙏Ok na ako sa laptop lang muna,
⭐Pero biniyayaan ako ng extra monitor at desktop dahil pinaghahanda na pala ako ni Lord ng maraming workload.

🙏Ok na ako sa simpleng workstation lang,
⭐Pero pinagbigyan din ako ni misis lagyan ng mga pailaw at mga anek-anek (mura lang kasi sa Shopee, haha!)

🙏Sabi ko rin sa sarili ko dati, manunuod na lang ako sa YouTube ng mga tutorials,
⭐Pero pinakilala ako ni Lord sa mga taong magbibigay access sa akin sa mga platforms at tools na relevant sa trabaho ko.

🙏Minsan pinagdasal namin itong work ko,
⭐Ngayon, araw-araw ko ng nakikita ang paglaki ng anak namin.

Mahirap talaga sa simula lalo na kung wala ka pang resources. Wala na rin yung hype na 6-digit na kitaan ng mga freelancers. Haha. Pero nandun pa rin yung possibility.

Find your motivation.

Ang maganda dito sa Remote Work Industry, libre ang pag-research at ang pag-develop ng skills at niche. Oo mainam naman yung mga paid online trainings dyan kasi mga tenured na din talaga yung mga nagtuturo, pero may libreng paraan naman.

Lahat nadadaan sa Tiyaga.
Minsan wala na yung Nilaga.
Pero 'di mo namamalayan, ang layo mo na pala.
