Few realize that east of Luzon, deep within the Philippine Rise (formerly Benham Rise), rests a sleeping titan — the Apolaki Caldera, the largest known caldera on Earth.

Spanning an astonishing 150 kilometers in diameter, Apolaki dwarfs even Yellowstone and Toba. Scientists believe it was formed by cataclysmic volcanic eruptions millions of years ago, explosions so immense that they reshaped the seafloor and carved out the vast underwater basin we know today.

The Apolaki Caldera was officially identified by marine geophysicist Jenny Anne Barretto and her team in 2019, using high-resolution bathymetric mapping of the Philippine Rise.

Families gathered outside the Cebu Provincial Hospital in Bogo City on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, mourning the loss of loved ones a day after a 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck northern Cebu, leaving at least 69 people dead and many others injured.

At least eight people, including a pregnant woman, were confirmed dead when a housing structure collapsed in Yolanda Village, Polambato, Bogo City.

Landslides in Sogod also sent huge boulders crashing onto roads leading to Bogo after the powerful tremor on Tuesday night, September 30.
