Today, we indeed appear to pause to honor Our Lady of Sorrows, the Blessed Virgin, who, standing faithfully under the Cross, suffered with her Son in silent strength and boundless love. This memorial initiates within us the Seven Sorrows of Mary, which were the moments of piercing sorrow in her heart as from the prophecy of Simeon to the burial of Jesus. In every sorrow, however, she remained steadfast and became a paradigm of compassion, endurance, and maternal care in all those who suffer.
Her sorrow was not despair, but a deep participation in the mystery of redemption. It was with sorrow and bittersweetness when we see one with tears in her eyes and in the silence, we sit in memory. As the Church proclaims, "Standing by the cross of Jesus was his mother..." (John 19:25), we are reminded of the point that it turns out that sorrow linked with love becomes this grace house in which her mother is every point of her life.
Asking of the mother, let us draw near to her in her sorrow, so as she accompanies us in whatever trial we have to endure. May she teach us that we can accept suffering by faith, and continue to cling to Christ even during the darkest hour of time. Through her, may our hearts pierce open-not only with pain but also with transforming love from her Son.
