FLOS CARMELI!
The Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is celebrated annually on July 16th. It commemorates the Virgin Mary's appearance to St. Simon Stock in 1251, when she is said to have given him the Brown Scapular as a sign of her protection. This feast is a significant event for the Carmelite Order and the Catholic Church, emphasizing devotion to Mary and her role as a guide and protector.

Let us Pray!
May the venerable intercession of the glorious Virgin Mary
come to our aid, we pray, O Lord,
so that, fortified by her protection,
we may reach the mountain which is Christ.
Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

DID YOU KNOW?

Although their patronal fiesta falls every December 8th, the parishioners of Libagon, Southern Leyte also holds the July 16 Feast of Virgen del Carmen with much fervor and religiosity. In fact, in the recent times, this fiesta in honor of the segunda patrona of the municipality might have even overshadowed the principal feast day, which is dedicated to the Virgin Mary's Immaculate Conception. The communal religious activity highlights a rite called by the locals as “Pangilis,” which has been identified with their devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Its name is rooted from the Cebuano word, “Ilis,” which means “to change.” Compared to the town patronal fiesta of December 8 which falls on the “Kahuyogan” (fiesta day), the Pangilis celebration takes place on “Liwas” (post-fiesta), after July 16.

While the main December 8 fiesta is a joint parochial and municipal event, the July 16 fiesta del Carmen is a religious celebration. The proceeds from the benefit dance held in the evening, which is now done in daytime, goes to fund future parish programs and projects.

It was said that the devotion to the Virgen del Carmen in Libagon fluorished when the Espina Family, whose ancestral roots came from Bohol, introduced it around the early 1900s and the 1930s. The founding of the Cofradia del Virgen del Carmen (the Confraternity of the Our Lady of Mount Carmel), a religious organization (a “Kapunongan”) in charge of propagating the devotion and the upkeep of the image, was also attributed to the family. From this period, the Pangilis rite started as a parochial celebration. The local government, together with the help of the Sinulog Foundation of Cebu, later developed the rite into a festival and a heritage event, and was conceptualized in the year 2017.

Signalling the nine-day novena prayers in anticipation of the fiesta of the Virgen del Carmen, a Jornada is observed on the noon of July 7. The Jornada is the transfer of the images of the patron saints of the barangays and sitios under the parish of Libagon from their chapels to the main church. At the afternoon, the novena is said. The prayer ends with the chanting of the Gozos, a series of estribillos (couplet) repeated after every estrofa (verse) which speaks of the joys in the Virgin Mary’s apparition at Mount Carmel. Mass follows after the prayer. The Novena Masses are observed every afternoon until the 15th, the Vesperas (vesper).

A Pontifical Mass, presided by the bishop of Maasin and concelebrated by priests from neighboring parishes, is observed on the 16th, the Kahuyugan (the day of the fiesta). After which, the Pangilis Festival Parade and Competition is held to depict the history behind the rite.

The next day, July 17, the Liwas (the post-fiesta), the local bugle tours the town sounding the "Diana" for the Pangilis. A Requiem Mass for the past Carmelitas (the officers, organizers and sponsors of the Cofradia del Virgen del Carmen) and hermanos and hermanas mayores. After the mass, the Pangilis follows, where the next officials for the cofradia are elected and the next hermano or hermana mayor is selected and appointed (“Giilisan ang mga opisyales sa cofradia”). This event is done at the church. At noon, the outgoing hermano or hermana mayor leads the procession and hands over the Virgen from the caro (carriage) to the newly-elected officials of the cofradia. A joyous street dancing, also called “Pangilis,” follows the rite. This communal rhythmic dancing is celebrated with locals preparing food, traditional games, competitions and the crowning of the Hari ug Hara sa Pangilis, which ends on or before midnight.

Towards the end of the fanfare, the festival jingle plays the first half of its lyrics:

Sa malamboon natong kasaysayan,
Mao'y naandan sa katawhan.
Ang liwas sa maayo nga kapistahan
Mosunod ang mabulokon nga kasaulogan.
Mga molopyo nagmadasigon
sa pinangga nga lungsod sa Libagon.
Pasalamat sa Birhen sa Carmen, atong patron.
Kalihokan maanindot ihalad 'ta karon.

Pangilis, alang sa atong bag-ong paglaum.
Pangilis, alang sa atong bag-ong sinugdan.
Pangilis, alang sa atong bag-ong saad.
Maglipay 'tang tanan sa Pangilis.

Halad pasalamat sa Birhen sa Carmen,
Ang Pangilis, saulogon ta!
Ang Pangilis!

PANGILIS is a cultural festival which is a carried over tradition from generations
that has rooted from the "lumads" since the early 1900's. Pangilis is celebrated to
honor the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel every 16th of July.

Pangilis is a local dialect which comes from the Visayan root word "ilis", means
change. It carries out the symbolic change of Hermana and Hermano Mayor and
election of the new set of officers who will manage the fiesta celebration in the
following year. It is a whole day affair that starts with the kick-off of "Dayana" - an
early morning beat and sounds of drums and bugles at the break of dawn to
awaken the locals, signifying the commencement of the merrymaking day that
will last until midnight. As early as eight in the morning, devotees gather to
participate in the annual meeting, wherein a new set of officers will be elected,
including the selection of Hermano & Hermana Mayor. The outgoing Hermano &
Hermana Mayor will lead the procession with the devotees and hand-over the
venerated image of the Birhen sa Carmen to the newly elected leaders. After, all
town folks, devotees and guests from all walks of life, will proceed to the traditional
PANGILIS which is celebrated through abundance of food, singing and dancing,
folkloric games, and the crowning of the traditional festival queen and king using
the indigenous vine, "cadena de amor" fashioned into a headpiece resembling
a crown to those who will become the crowd favorite as "Hari ug Hara sa Pangilis".

Declared by the Sangguniang Bayan of Libagon and duly recognized by the
National Commission for Culture and the Arts as one of the intangible cultural
properties of the Municipality, Pangilis is a unique tradition that instills a sense of
pride among residents and locals, enhances cultural and religious identity of the
community, and preserves the arts, culture, and heritage that is truly
"Libagonhon".

ORATIO IMPERATA: Pag-ampo Tungod sa Nasinating Linog (Revised version)

- Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo

______________________________
Ginoong Dios, Makagagahum namong Amahan

Among Ginoo ug Manluluwas. Amen.

WHY DO WE CELEBRATE THE FEAST OF OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL?

While Our Lady of Mt. Carmel is the patron saint of the Carmelite Order, the basis for the universal Church honoring Mary under this title dates to her appearance to an English Carmelite, St. Simon Stock, in the 13th century. She gave him the Brown Scapular, a garment worn by religious over the neck and shoulders as an apron, to be worn by Carmelites "as a sign of her protection." It is a Marian devotional practice which, over the centuries, has spread to Catholics around the world.

Our Lady gave the Brown Scapular to St. Simon Stock on July 16, 1251. Since that time, the Brown Scapular, a small version of the Carmelite habit, is a sign of living for Jesus, following the example of the Blessed Virgin. The Brown Scapular indicates that one is in communion with the Carmelites and living a Marian spirituality as they do.

“Let the faithful remember that true devotion consists neither in sterile or transitory affection, nor in a certain vain credulity, but proceeds from true faith, by which we are led to know the excellence of the Mother of God, and we are moved to a filial love toward our mother and to the imitation of her virtues.” (Lumen Gentium, 67)

TODAY | SOLEMNITY OF STS. PETER AND PAUL, APOSTLES.

On June 29, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul to honor the two great apostles Peter and Paul. St. Peter, one of the Twelve and the chief of the Apostles, the Rock upon which Christ built His Church, and St. Paul “called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God” (Romans 1:1) and Apostle to the Gentiles. Together they are honored as founders of the Church of Rome, having been separately martyred there during the reign of Emperor Nero.
