There isn't one single reason why the whole world seems to be experiencing more earthquakes. Here are some possible explanations:
1. Earth's tectonic plates are always moving
The Earth's crust is made up of large pieces called tectonic plates. These plates constantly move, collide, separate, and slide past each other. Earthquakes happen when stress builds up and is suddenly released along faults.
2. Many earthquakes happen every day
Scientists record thousands of earthquakes every year. Most are too small to be felt. It may seem like there are more earthquakes now because news and social media allow us to hear about events from all over the world instantly.
3. Aftershocks and earthquake clusters
A large earthquake can trigger many aftershocks and sometimes influence nearby faults, leading to a series of earthquakes in a region.
4. The Pacific "Ring of Fire"
Many earthquakes occur around the Pacific Ring of Fire, where several tectonic plates meet. Countries such as the Japan, Philippines, Indonesia, and the western parts of the United States experience frequent earthquakes because of their location.
5. Some human activities can trigger small earthquakes
Activities such as mining, large reservoirs behind dams, geothermal projects, and certain types of deep underground fluid injection can occasionally trigger earthquakes. However, these are generally much smaller than major natural earthquakes.
Are earthquakes increasing worldwide?
Based on scientific records, there is no strong evidence that the total number of major earthquakes worldwide is steadily increasing. What has increased is our ability to detect, measure, and report them quickly.
For people in the Philippines, frequent earthquakes are expected because the country sits along active fault systems and near the Pacific Ring of Fire. This doesn't necessarily mean a global catastrophe is happening, but it does remind us to stay prepared with emergency plans and supplies.
A good reminder comes from Psalm 46:1:
"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble."
While earthquakes can be frightening, preparedness, knowledge, and faith can help us face uncertain times with wisdom and courage.
