“JESUS WAS RICH, HE BECAME POOR, SO I CAN BECOME RICH” — IS THIS MONEY?
Short answer: NO.
Paul is not teaching money riches.
The verse (Paul’s words)
> “For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.”
— 2 Corinthians 8:9 (KJB)
What Jesus was rich in
He was with the Father
He had glory
He had life
He had authority
> “And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.”
— John 17:5
How He became poor
He took the form of a servant
He humbled Himself
He suffered
He died the death of the cross
> “Who… made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant…”
— Philippians 2:6–8
This is not about Jesus losing money.
It is about His humiliation unto death.
What kind of rich we became
Paul explains this clearly:
> “In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace.”
— Ephesians 1:7
> “That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.”
— Ephesians 2:7
> “Blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.”
— Ephesians 1:3
Paul defines riches as:
Grace
Forgiveness
Life in Christ
Position in Christ
Spiritual blessings
Not money.
Why Paul said this in 2 Corinthians 8
Context matters.
Paul is encouraging willing giving, not promising wealth.
> “For I mean not that other men be eased, and ye burdened.”
— 2 Corinthians 8:13
If this verse meant “Jesus became poor so you get rich in money,”
Paul would be contradicting his own teaching:
> “Having food and raiment let us be therewith content.”
— 1 Timothy 6:8
> “They that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare.”
— 1 Timothy 6:9
Right Division conclusion
X Not a promise of financial wealth
X Not prosperity teaching
♡ Yes: Grace riches through the cross
♡ Yes: Salvation, life, and position in Christ
Application for today (Body of Christ)
♡ Rest in what Christ already made you
♡ Give freely, not to get rich
♡ Rejoice in grace riches, not earthly gain
> “Christ is all.”
— Colossians 3:11
Bottom line:
--> The verse is about GRACE, not MONEY. - ✍ Nhey Vill Des Grace and Peace. Amen.
