SUPER TYPHOON UWAN is expected to cause severe to catastrophic damage to areas in its direct path, including widespread flooding, landslides, life-threatening storm surges, and extensive property destruction.
EXPECTED DAMAGE BREAKDOWN
🌪WINDS: The typhoon is forecast to make landfall at or near Super Typhoon intensity, potentially reaching Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 5 conditions, meaning winds of 185 kph or higher.
🏘HOUSING AND INFRASTRUCTURE: Severe to catastrophic damage is expected for houses of poor or average construction; even well-constructed houses may suffer substantial roof and wall damage. Many industrial buildings could be destroyed, and most windows in high-rise buildings may be blown out.
☎️POWER AND COMMUNICATIONS: Near-total loss of power supply and telecommunications is likely due to numerous downed power lines, poles, and cellular towers, with disruptions lasting prolonged periods.
⚠️DEBRIS: Significant airborne debris will be generated, posing a serious risk of injury or death to people and animals exposed to the winds.
🏞AGRICULTURE: Significant damage to banana and similar plants is expected, with almost total damage to rice and other crops.
🌧RAINFALL, FLOODING, LANDSLIDES: Uwan is expected to dump moderate to torrential rain (up to 500 mm or more) over several days, leading to widespread flash floods and landslides, especially in the mountainous terrain of Northern Luzon. Areas previously hit by Typhoon Tino are at heightened risk due to soil saturation.
🌊COASTAL IMPACTS: A high-risk, life-threatening storm surge of over 3 meters (9-10 feet) is possible along the eastern and northern coasts of Luzon, including Isabela, Aurora, Quezon, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, and Northern Samar. This will likely cause severe coastal inundation and extensive property loss in low-lying areas.
Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable areas to heed evacuation orders and prepare for life-threatening conditions.
