I am now letting you free.
This was the profound realization the Spaniards came to after occupying the Philippines for over 333 years.
A multitude of wars broke out. Many fought, and many perished. Yet, countless individuals ultimately managed to break free from the toxic occupiers who had once tortured them.

On March 18, 1521, the first travelers from Spain crossed vast oceans to discover hidden gems across the globe. However, they were not alone. Constantly locked in head-to-head competition with neighboring global powers, they ultimately managed to win dominion over the Philippines.
They connected an archipelago that was once ruled by thousands of different local leaders, successfully unifying a fractured and diverse nation.
Yet, just as they connected our ancestors, reality hit like a bomb. They controlled our people, severed our freedom, and harshly treated Filipinos like peasants who were unworthy of reaching their high societal norms.
Many Filipinos fought back, yet failed to reach the peak of our own freedom. June 12, 1898, was not just any ordinary dateโit was the exact moment history was made.

Following its defeat in the Spanish-American War, Spain ceded the Philippines to the United States under the 1898 Treaty of Paris.
The Americans taught us about formal education, drove the modernization of our infrastructure, and established the very government system we live under today, which is democratic governance.
Yet, why does it still feel like it wasn't enough?

During World War II, Japan occupied the Philippines, establishing a strict military government.
This dark period caused widespread destruction, economic devastation, and the loss of countless Filipino and allied lives during a brutal occupation.
Many of our elderly faced the sheer brutality and harshness of this era, especially the women who endured harassment and sexual assaults that left deep, lifelong trauma.
Finally, allied forces, led by the United States and fiercely supported by Filipino guerrilla fighters, defeated the Japanese forces and reclaimed the Philippines in 1945.

Looking back at the blood-stained pages of our history, I realize that freedom is never given on a silver platter, it is forged in the fires of sacrifice.
The successive occupations by the Spanish, Americans, and Japanese teach us that a nation's true identity cannot be crushed by foreign chains, nor can a people's spirit be permanently silenced. I now see that any form of progress, whether it comes through infrastructure or formal education, remains hollow if it is bought at the cost of our sovereign dignity.
As I stand on the shoulders of the martyrs who broke these chains, my ultimate realization is that our generation carries the heavy responsibility to safeguard this hard-won liberty.
We must ensure that the phrase "I am now letting you free" is never something we anxiously wait to hear from an oppressor ever again. Instead, it must remain an enduring, unshakeable truth that we actively live, breathe, and protect every single day.
With immense pride in my heart as I watch our three stars and a sun fly high and untethered in the sky, I proudly shout to the heavens: Happy Independence Day, my beloved Philippines! Today, we celebrate not just the absence of foreign masters, but the eternal victory of our resilient spirit.
