Noong bata pa ako, ang hotdog ang sukatan ng kasayahan.
Tuwing may handaan, ‘yun agad ang hinahanap.
Makita ko pa lang sa mesa — parang panalo na ang araw ko.
Kahit malamig, kahit tuyo, basta hotdog, ayos na.

Kasi noon, hindi ko alam ang iba.
Hindi ko alam ang mas masustansya, mas mahalaga, mas totoo.

Pero habang tumatanda, natuto akong pumili.
Hindi na lahat ng makulay, masarap.
Hindi na lahat ng abot, dapat kuhanin.

Ngayon, kaya ko nang bumili ng hotdog kahit kailan.
Pero bihira ko nang gustuhin.

Dahil hindi na lang panlasa ang pinapakinggan ko,
kundi ang katawan, isip, at puso.
Mas alam ko na ngayon kung alin ang pansamantala,
at alin ang panghabambuhay.

"He Captured My Attention"

Today while my wife and I were eating at a small local eatery, a boy walked in quietly, holding a few strands of sampaguita he was selling. He couldn’t have been more than 17 years old.

He wasn’t begging. He just stood there, trying to offer his sampaguita to the diners, but it was clear—he looked hungry.

Something about him captured my attention.

I asked him if he had eaten. He shook his head. So I told him, “Order whatever you want.” At first, he hesitated—maybe he wasn’t used to kindness from strangers. But when he finally sat down with a plate of food, the way he ate said everything.

Before we left, I tapped him on the shoulder and said,
“Lagi mo lang Sipagan at Galingan, Wag kalimutan tumawag sa taas” I forgot to ask his name—something I now wish I had done.

That moment hit me deeply.

We often pass by kids like him, caught up in their daily hustle for a few pesos. But seeing him up close, sitting just across from us, reminded me how easy it is to make a small difference. A warm meal. A full stomach. A few minutes of safety and comfort.

Sometimes, it takes a quiet moment like this to make you pause and reflect. Not out of pity—but out of humanity.
