🎬 Internationally-acclaimed actress Judy Ann Santos has secured the MMFF Best Actress award an impressive three times, a milestone that typically qualifies recipients for induction into the festival's Hall of Fame.

Here's a breakdown of her wins:

⭐ 2006: Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo 🏆

At age 28, Santos won for her lead role in this romantic comedy directed by Jose Javier Reyes, where she portrayed a woman navigating marriage and family life.

The film was a box-office hit and marked her first MMFF Best Actress trophy.

This win highlighted her comedic timing and emotional depth, earning her widespread acclaim.

⭐ 2019: Mindanao 🏆

Santos received her second Best Actress award at age 41 for her powerful portrayal of a mother caught in the crossfire of conflict in this war drama directed by Brillante Mendoza.

The film addressed real-life issues in the southern Philippines, and her performance was praised for its raw intensity and authenticity.

⭐ 2024: Espantaho 🏆

Her third win came at age 46 for the horror-thriller Espantaho (translated as Scarecrow internationally), directed by Chito S. Roño.

Playing a complex, haunted character, Santos delivered a chilling yet nuanced performance that resonated with audiences and critics.

The film was an official entry in the 50th MMFF, and her victory made her the only acting award for the entry.

Following this, she also won Best Actress for the same role at the 2025 Fantasporto International Film Festival in Portugal, further cementing its global recognition.

These three wins distinguish her as one of the most awarded actresses in MMFF history for the Best Actress category.

Congratulations, Juday! 🎉

✈️ The Philippines officially known as the Republic of the Philippines, is an archipelagic nation in Southeast Asia comprising a vast number of islands scattered across the western Pacific Ocean. 🇵🇭

The latest official count, determined by the National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA) — the government's central agency for mapping and geospatial data — stands at 7,641 islands.

This figure was established through advanced satellite imagery, GPS technology, and on-ground verification efforts, updating the long-held estimate of 7,107 islands that had been cited for decades.

The revision, finalized around 2016–2017, added over 500 previously uncharted or unnamed landmasses, though the exact number can fluctuate slightly due to natural geological processes like erosion, volcanic activity, or tidal changes that may cause some small islets to emerge or submerge.

Of these 7,641 islands, only about 2,000 are inhabited, with the majority being small, uninhabited, and unnamed (over 5,000 fall into this category).

The islands are broadly grouped into three major geographical divisions from north to south:

🌾 Luzon (the largest and most populous, home to the capital Manila and accounting for a significant portion of the country's land area and population),

🌿 the Visayas (a central cluster known for its beaches, festivals, and biodiversity),

☘️ and Mindanao (the second-largest island, featuring diverse cultures and landscapes).

The 50 largest islands alone cover around 321,000 square kilometers (about 99% of the total land area) and house nearly the entire population of over 100 million people.

This count underscores the Philippines' status as one of the world's most biodiverse archipelagos, with unique ecosystems ranging from coral reefs and rainforests to volcanic terrains.

However, it also highlights ongoing challenges, such as territorial disputes in areas like the Spratly Islands (part of the South China Sea claims) and the need for continued mapping to account for environmental changes.

As of September 2025, no further official updates from NAMRIA have been reported, making 7,641 the current standard figure used in government, academic, and international references.

✨ The report highlighting the Philippines as having the lowest Return on Tourism Impact (RoTI) in Southeast Asia was authored by investment and hedge fund manager Eric Jurado and published in the Institutional Investor in June 2025.

Titled “Which Southeast Asian Countries Truly Profit from Tourism,” it introduces the RoTI framework, a metric that evaluates how efficiently countries convert tourism investments into economic gains, including revenue, GDP contribution, employment, and social value, relative to government and private sector spending.

Unlike traditional metrics focusing solely on tourist arrivals or revenue, RoTI emphasizes sustainable and inclusive returns.

The Philippines scored a RoTI of 0.57, the lowest among six Southeast Asian countries studied (Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and the Philippines).

This means the country generated only 57 cents for every dollar invested in tourism.

Over several years, the Duterte and Marcos administrations allocated approximately $23 billion to tourism infrastructure and promotional programs, but in 2024, total tourism receipts were only about $13.1 billion.

Jurado’s report identifies four key weaknesses contributing to the Philippines’ underperformance:

✨ Weak Branding 🐢

The Philippines struggles with low brand equity, scoring 120.8 on Jurado’s Digital Brand Score, compared to Singapore and Thailand’s scores above 147. The shift from “It’s More Fun in the Philippines” to “Love the Philippines” in 2023 has not significantly boosted global recognition.

✨Inadequate Infrastructure 🐂

Despite significant investments, key gateways like Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), Cebu, and Davao airports require major upgrades. Inter-island transport and digital infrastructure (e.g., seamless booking and payment systems) also lag.

✨ Restrictive Visa Policies 🐄

The Philippines’ visa policies are less competitive than those of regional peers like Singapore and Malaysia, which offer streamlined visa-on-arrival or longer visa-free stays. This limits accessibility for high-spending foreign tourists.

✨ Limited Data-Driven Planning 🐅

The government often prioritizes job creation metrics, but low RoTI indicates these jobs are low-quality or poorly paid. Jurado suggests a lack of data-driven strategies hinders effective resource allocation.

🎙🎶 Jong Madaliday is a formidable contender for the title of The Clash 2025 grand champion. 🏆

His journey in the competition, coupled with his prior experience as a Season 1 runner-up, positions him as a seasoned and emotionally compelling performer.

Several factors make him a strong candidate to win the grand prize, which includes 1 Million Pesos, a management contract with Sparkle GMA Artist Center, and a house and lot worth over 4 Million Pesos.

Jong Madaliday, often referred to as the “Trending R&B Star of North Cotabato,” rose to prominence through his talent and persistence.

Hailing from North Cotabato, a province in the Soccsksargen region of Mindanao, Jong grew up in a relatively remote area, which initially limited his exposure to major music opportunities.

He began gaining attention at the age of 15 through YouTube, where he posted covers that showcased his smooth R&B style, earning him a significant online following.

His early online presence laid the foundation for his career, making him a local sensation before he ventured into national competitions.

Before The Clash, Jong participated in It’s Showtime’s talent competition segment PINASikat as the lead singer of the three-piece music group BMP, demonstrating his early involvement in the music industry.

In 2018, at around 18 years old, he moved to Manila to audition for The Clash Season 1, marking a pivotal step in his career.

Despite facing challenges, including a temporary setback during the COVID-19 pandemic when he parted ways with GMA Network in 2021, Jong remained active on social media platforms like TikTok and YouTube.

His consistent engagement with fans through TikTok Live and his YouTube channel, which has over 417,000 subscribers and earned him a Silver Play Button, kept his career alive.

By 2022, he expressed excitement about new management handling his singing career, signaling a resurgence in his professional journey.

His social media success culminated in amassing over one million followers on both Facebook and TikTok, a milestone celebrated by fellow GMA artists like Anthony Rosaldo and Claire Castro.

Jong’s story is one of resilience, leveraging digital platforms to maintain relevance and connect with fans worldwide, even when mainstream opportunities were scarce.

His emotional performances and relatable persona have endeared him to audiences, with judges and fans alike noting his ability to evoke deep emotions through his singing.

Jong Madaliday returned to The Clash in its seventh season, The Clash 2025, as a “Clashbacker,” a term for returning contestants from previous seasons.

Having been a runner-up in Season 1 in 2018, where he reached the Top 6 and competed in the grand finale, Jong entered the 2025 season with experience and determination.

The season, hosted by Julie Anne San Jose and Rayver Cruz and judged by Christian Bautista, Ai-Ai delas Alas, and Lani Misalucha, premiered on June 8, 2025, and concluded on September 7, 2025, with 14 episodes.

Jong’s journey in The Clash 2025 was marked by standout performances that showcased his vocal prowess and emotional depth.

In Episode 4, aired on June 29, 2025, he performed a tearful rendition of “Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls, which moved judges Ai-Ai delas Alas and Lani Misalucha to tears.

The performance went viral, garnering 1.5 million views on The Clash’s official page within a day, and secured his advancement to Round 2.

Host Julie Anne San Jose was also visibly emotional, highlighting Jong’s ability to connect with audiences and judges alike.

In Episode 7, Jong delivered a soulful performance of Billie Eilish’s “I Love You,” further cementing his reputation for delivering emotionally charged performances.

His ability to capture the essence of each song’s emotion was a recurring theme throughout the competition.

As the competition progressed, Jong faced a critical moment in the final “Matira ang Matibay” showdown on August 24, 2025, where he was at risk of elimination.

Competing against Nef Medina, Jong performed a heartfelt rendition of “Say Something” by A Great Big World and Christina Aguilera.

While judge Christian Bautista chose Nef, both Ai-Ai delas Alas and Lani Misalucha voted for Jong, securing his place in the Top 5 finalists alongside Juary Sabith, Vilmark Viray, Arabelle Dela Cruz, and Liafer Deloso.

In the lead-up to the grand finale, Jong reprised “Tadhana” in the Top 6 round, proving his consistency and readiness for the final stage.

His journey was characterized by resilience, having overcome health-related setbacks in Season 1 and the pressure of returning as a Clashbacker in 2025.

His performances consistently highlighted his vocal control, emotional delivery, and ability to connect with both judges and viewers, positioning him as a strong contender for the finale.

You got this, Jong! Good luck tonight! Mindanao represent!!! 🎉
