A "GO bag," also known as a "bug-out bag" or "emergency kit," is a collection of essential items you would need to survive for at least 72 hours (3 days) if you had to evacuate quickly due to an emergency or disaster.
Here is a comprehensive list of what should generally be inside, though you should tailor it to your personal and family needs (including pets):
Water & Food
• Water: One gallon of water per person per day (for drinking and sanitation).
• Non-perishable food: At least a 3-day supply of non-perishable, easy-to-prepare food (e.g., energy bars, ready-to-eat canned goods, dried fruit).
• Manual Can Opener (if packing canned food).
Medical & Personal Needs
• First Aid Kit: Including bandages, gauze, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any other necessary items.
• Medications: At least a 7-day supply of all prescription and non-prescription medications.
• Personal Hygiene Items: Soap, hand sanitizer, moist towelettes, toilet paper, toothbrush/toothpaste, feminine hygiene products.
• Prescription Eyeglasses/Contacts and solution, if needed.
• Infant/Pet Supplies: Diapers, formula, pet food, water, leash, carrier, and updated medical records for pets.
Tools & Shelter
• Flashlight: With extra batteries, or a hand-crank flashlight.
• Radio: Battery-powered or hand-crank NOAA weather radio with tone alert, and extra batteries.
• Multi-purpose Tool (like a pocket knife or multi-tool).
• Whistle: To signal for help.
• Dust Mask: To help filter contaminated air.
• Duct Tape and Plastic Sheeting: To shelter-in-place (seal off a room).
• Wrench or Pliers: To turn off utilities.
• Sleeping Bag or Warm Blanket (one for each person).
• Complete Change of Clothing and sturdy shoes for each person.
Important Documents & Money
• Copies of Important Documents: Stored in a waterproof, portable container or bag (e.g., passports, birth certificates, driver's licenses, insurance policies, medical records, bank account information).
• Cash: ATMs may not work, so include a small amount of cash in small bills and coins.
• Emergency Contact Information: Written list of family, friends, doctors, and out-of-state contacts.
• Local Maps: Paper maps, in case GPS/cell service is down.
Communication & Power
• Cell phone and Chargers: With a backup battery or power bank.
• Pen and Paper.
Pro Tip: Store your GO bag in a place that is easy to reach, like a hall closet or near an exit, and make sure to check and update its contents (especially food, water, and medications) at least once or twice a year.
