Still thinking about the incredible blooms from the recently concluded 2025 Shilin Residence Chrysanthemum Festival (Nov 28 – Dec 14). 🌼✨

Before heading into the historic Main Residence of Chiang Kai-shek, I spent some time getting lost in the massive floral displays in the outer gardens. This year’s theme, "Chrysanthemum Art Fulfills Dreams," featured everything from artistic flower carpets to the famous "Da-Ju" (Grand Chrysanthemums)—some of which have over 100 flowers blooming from a single stem! 🌸🙌

It’s amazing to see how the grounds transition from the vibrant, creative energy of the festival into the calm, preserved history of the official residence. Even though the official event has ended, the garden's beauty and the history of the mansion make this such a special corner of Taipei. 🇹🇼🏛️

Quick Info for your next trip:

📍 Location: Shilin Official Residence (10 min walk from MRT Shilin Exit 2).

📅 Festival Dates: Late November to mid-December annually.

🎟️ Tip: The gardens are free, but keep in mind there is a NT$100 fee to tour the inside of the Main Mansion!

When the mines closed in the 90s, the population dwindled—until 2008, when a local advocate began organizing volunteers to provide better care for the village's stray cats. Finding yourself in Houtong Cat Village is like stepping into a real-life Ghibli movie! 🐾✨

Located in the Ruifang District of Taiwan, this former coal-mining town has transformed into a hillside sanctuary where the feline residents outnumber the humans. Whether you’re a photographer, a cat lover, or just looking for a unique day trip from Taipei, Houtong is a must-visit.

By Train (Most Recommended)

Taking the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) train is direct and scenic.

Departure: Start at Taipei Main Station.

Train Type: Look for a Local Train (Qujian) heading toward Yilan or Su'ao. Some North-bound Tze-Chiang or Chu-Kuang express trains also stop at Ruifang, where you would need to transfer to a local train for the final stop.

Arrival Station: Get off at Houtong Station. The village is connected directly to the station via a cat-themed pedestrian bridge.

Duration: The journey typically takes about 50 to 60 minutes.

Payment: You can use an EasyCard or iPass to swipe in and out, or buy a ticket at the station for approximately TWD 50-60.

Before flying back to Manila, I used my last Taipei FunPass (.en) at the Chi Po Lin Museum. It’s a breathtaking tribute to the director of “Beyond Beauty: Taiwan from Above,” which won Best Documentary at the 50th Golden Horse Awards. 🏆

Director Chi Po Lin didn't just capture Taiwan’s stunning mountains and seas; he sacrificed everything—even mortgaging his home—to show the world both the beauty and the environmental "scars" of this island. Seeing the actual gear he used and hearing his story of perseverance was so moving.

A truly inspiring way to say goodbye. ☁️📷
