The construction of the 96-meter Laog Bridge in Angat, Bulacan by the Department of Public Works and Highways โ Bulacan 2nd District Engineering Office continues to move forward despite setbacks caused by recent typhoons and heavy rains.
According to District Engineer George Santos, the projectโwhich will serve as a vital link between Barangays Laog and Santa Cruz and the national highwayโis part of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.โs administrationโs infrastructure push to improve rural connectivity and boost agricultural productivity.
The bridge is also among the top priorities of Bulacan 6th District Representative Salvador A. Pleyto Sr., who has emphasized the need for improved transport access in agricultural communities. Once completed, the bridge is expected to significantly reduce transportation costs for farmers and ensure safer, more efficient travel for residents.
โThe town of Angat plays a vital role in Bulacanโs food production, with over 1,900 hectares of agricultural land. Around 130 farmers in Laog and Santa Cruz will directly benefit from this project,โ Santos said.
Construction began on March 21, 2024, with Phase 1 funded by an initial โฑ28.95 million allocation. This phase included the development of temporary access roads for transporting equipment and materials, the installation of a craneway for heavy machinery, and the construction of bored piles that serve as the bridgeโs deep foundations.
Phase 2 commenced on March 7, 2025, under a โฑ93.59 million contract covering the superstructure, additional bored piles, and slope protection. While completion was originally set for November 7, 2025, adjustments have been made to the timeline due to weather-related disruptions.
In mid-July, Typhoon Crising and intensified monsoon rains triggered flash floods from the Angat River, damaging the temporary access roads and slowing down construction activities.
Despite these challenges, Santos assured the public that the project remains on track within its revised timeline. He described the bridge as a โlifelineโ for local farmers and families who rely on safe and reliable access to markets, schools, and essential services. #
