π¨ April Is Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month! π
Did you know In 2022, around five cats every day were abused?? These figures depict a grim reality for our feline companions, who are sadly the second most abused pets after dogs.
Here are some animal abuse statistics and facts at a glance:
π΄ An estimated 10 million animals die from abuse or cruelty every year in the United States.
π΄ About 250,000 animals annually are found to be victims of animal hoarding, with most living in unsanitary conditions.
π΄ Nearly 400,000 dogs that enter shelters across the country are euthanized annually.
π΄ Over 110 million animals are killed in U.S. laboratories each year.
π΄Roughly 85% of people arrested for animal abuse or cruelty have had multiple past arrests, with 70% having prior felonies.
3 PAWSOME Ways to Support the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals π
1οΈβ£ Report cruelty - If you witness an animal being abused or neglected (e.g., left tied or chained without water, abandoned by owners, malnourished, etc.), contact your local police precinct and file a report.
2οΈβ£ Adopt, donβt shop - Discourage the proliferation of unethical puppy mills and backyard breeders by avoiding pet stores that sell dogs, cats, and other purebred animals. Adoption also saves lives by freeing up space in shelters and providing forever homes to other fur friends.
3οΈβ£ Volunteer - Rescues and shelters depend on volunteers. Ideas include: photographing pets who are up for adoption, walking dogs, providing office support, cuddling kittens, and greeting potential new pet parents. You can also call your local shelter and ask how you can be of service. Remember, all talents are welcome.
These are only a few ways caring individuals like you can get involved and help prevent cruelty to animals everywhere. Please contact us for other suggestions or to share an idea of your own.
From all of us at the PawsPlace team, we thank you for being an animal champion!
