The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and University of Santo Tomas Senior High School formalized a five-year partnership designed to enhance and transform arts education in the Philippines.

The agreement was sealed through a MOU signed between CCP President Kaye C. Tinga and UST Rector Fr. Richard Ang. The collaboration aims to integrate arts education across all senior high school programs going beyond the existing Music, Arts, and Design Track.

The initiative seeks to embed creativity into various academic disciplines.
CCP reaffirmed its commitment to expanding access to arts education.
The partnership also promotes community engagement through the arts.

Teacher development is a major focus of the program as they will receive specialized training from CCP experts.
Students will benefit from real-world apprenticeship opportunities as CCP will provide access to its professional facilities. Program activities will align with the Department of Educationโ€™s standards. Participants who complete the program will receive certification from CCP.

A central feature of the partnership is the Sining sa Eskwela Arts Training Program. This program is led by the CCP Arts Education Department.
It aims to strengthen arts integration in the USTSHS curriculum. The program includes three main components or pillars.

The first pillar, Sining Alamin, offers performances and student apprenticeships.

The second pillar, Arts Online Talk, provides lectures from artists and experts. These talks focus on cultural awareness and the creative industry.

The third pillar, Arts Academy, delivers training modules for teachers. USTSHS will support the program with venues and technical resources. The school will also handle coordination for onsite activities. Both institutions will collaborate on research and extension programs. These efforts will be connected to the Dominican Mission Community Service. The partnership aims to develop students who are creative, culturally aware, and socially responsible.

Overall, the collaboration positions arts education as essential in shaping future Filipino learners and educators.

โ€œThe barong Filipino overcame many obstacles, the biggest of which is the Filipinosโ€™ own colonial mentality,โ€ said Gawad CCP awardee Dr. Nicanor Tiongson in his special lecture at Costume Laboratory (COSLAB) 2, the Costume Design and Construction Laboratory for Philippine Theater workshop held last November 17 to 23, at the De La Salle - College of Saint Benilde.

The barong Filipino is more than a garmentโ€”it is a woven chronicle of the Filipino soul, shaped by centuries of struggle, adaptation, and pride. Born from pre-colonial attire, the baro endured foreign rule and emerged as a quiet yet powerful symbol of identity. Despite the pressures of colonial mentality, Filipinos preserved its essence, choosing heritage over imitation. As time passed, the barong absorbed subtle Western influences, adding collars, cuffs, and intricate embroidery while honoring the countryโ€™s tropical climate. Worn by the elite and the masses alike, it became a living canvas of social change and cultural endurance. Cultural historian Dr. Nicanor Tiongson emphasized that the barong Tagalogโ€™s transformation was closely tied to Filipino leaders who used clothing as a statement of nationalism. Philippine presidents later elevated the barong Filipino, wearing it during inaugurations and official events to assert nationalism and unity. Each administration left its mark, transforming the barong into a symbol of dignity and leadership.

This is reflective of how Presidents of the country like Manuel Quezon, Ramon Magsaysay, Diosdado Macapagal, Ferdinand Marcos and Fidel Ramos, sustained the barongโ€™s prominence by wearing it in formal state functions, reinforcing its role as a symbol of heritage, identity and leadership. At present, designers continue to reinvent the barong with contemporary silhouettes. Yet even as it graces runways and red carpets, its heart remains deeply Filipino that stands today as a living garmentโ€”ever evolving, yet firmly rooted in history.
