After COVID19 whats next?
Untreatable cases of a deadly fungus have been found at facilities in two US cities.
The Candida auris virus is notoriously hard to treat and has been spreading through nursing homes and hospitals in the country, but it appears to be becoming more dangerous after researchers found cases that were resistant to all known medicines.
The finding, released on Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is a worrying development. C. auris, a yeast infection discovered in Japan in 2009, has spread across much of the world.
That spread has accelerated, according to health officials, due to hospital and nursing home staff being overwhelmed by the coronavirus pandemic.
In the report, the CDC said that five of more than 120 cases of C. auris were resistant to treatment. It did not name the location of these cases.
While relatively harmless to those in good health, C. auris can be deadly to people with weakened immune systems.
