Hi everyone! To those who don’t know me yet, I’m Shalom Abejar or Shammy. I am just like any 25 y/o woman (25 na so not a girl pero not used to using woman din pero sige na nga lol) in the Philippines who has a regular job. I’ve been working as an English as a Second Language Teacher to Korean students since I was in college, so that has been a total of 7-8 years. It was fun at first like all the jobs that we have. I enjoyed talking to them, learning their culture and I still do love watching Korean dramas and now crazy about BTS, BUT doing the same routine EVERY SINGLE DAY got me exhausted. Imagine congratulating them on their new relationship when you’re heartbroken, being so perky with the highest pitch of voice when you’re sick and putting up with students who really didn’t want to study. I needed to escape, I had to breathe fresh air not literally fresh, but any air outside the office or far from Ortigas and that’s when I started traveling. *drum roll** :-)
I started by joining what we call “Joiner Tours” you know tours organized by travel agencies? Yep, because I only had the weekend to travel, I could file a leave for just a day close to the weekend like Monday or Friday and didn’t have the time to think about everything. The first one was in Ilocos, it was really amazing to see those windmills for the first time. We were actually involved in a car accident and went home by taking the public bus because our van got crushed and that didn’t stop me from traveling. Ilocos was followed by Bolinao and Hundred Islands then Puerto Galera then I learned how to book flights and went to Puerto Princesa, Cebu, Bohol... the rest is history. You don’t need to quit your job to travel. I went to all these places while being EMPLOYED, until I’ve been blessed with a travel business and got the courage to quit from my employment whenever a superior is being unreasonable when it comes to letting people have a little break from the craziness of their daily routines.
I’m a firm believer of the saying that “If there’s a will, there’s a way”. Don’t let your employment hinder you from living the life that you want. Remember that we work to live, we do not live to work.
#YOLO isn’t overrated especially for me who has a short life to live, since I have health complications, so if not know then when? When will I get to use this life to see the creation that the Lord has given to us? The answer: NOW!
