Cebu can rightfully claim to be the cradle of the Philippines if not the cradle of Christianity with the arrival of the Spaniards in the 16th century led by Portuguese explorer, Ferdinand Magellan circa 1521 forever shaping the destiny not only of Cebu but of the Philippines, Cebu which already had an active economy in the East due to its active port, now took on a global dimension as an important center for trade, industry and evangelization.
500 years hence, Cebu has evolved from a trading post in Southeast Asia into a major economic hub, contributing much to the growth of the Philippines and even largely even underwriting its development.
Such is a testament to its historical heritage, strategic location at the center of the archipelago and to the enterprising and innovative character of its people.
Founded by Martin M. Levering of Earl and Levering Law Firm along with John M. Switzer of John Switzer & Company in 1903, the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry was organized to advance the wellbeing of Cebu so that its citizens and the business community shall prosper it being at the forefront of increased shipping and port activities. After the First World War. it became a full-fledged non-stock and non-profit corporation in 15 June 1931.
As the organization grew, it flourished, responsive to the call of serving e Cebu business community. With the commendable and noteworthy leadership and dedication of its business icons, officers and trustees, advisers, partners and members-at-large, CCCI has proven its worth and commitment, undoubtably the prestigious lead as a legendary hall of famer among all local chambers in the Philippines and earning a niche as a catalyzer of economic growth and development and the prime mover of the business community in the Visayas.
Celebrating its 120th year as the oldest and earning a most renowned status and a pillar among local business membership organizations in the Philippines, the Cebu Chamber closed 2023 with close to 1,000 member companies from Industry, Trade, Service, ICT, and Sectoral Business Associations. It has sustained its vision as "the Engine of Cebuโs Business Growth and Competitiveness in the global economyโ, its passion as the voice of the business communities in Cebu.
Today, the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry commemorates longevity and prominence as a testament to the dedication, perseverance, and unwavering strength of its leaders and members in fostering closer relations, understanding, and cooperation among and within the various sectors of the local economy and by unifying the business community, creates an ecosystem that nurtures entrepreneurship, attracts investments, and fosters economic development.
