The act of stepping into his backyard is an intimate ritual for Ronyel Compra. Identifying Malabar hoary, buri palm, narra, and dragon fern, he forages not just with his eyes, but with deep respect for what the earth chooses to give.

After making staples of these natural materials in his art, Ronyel realized they had become core to his creative process.

Recently, his artistic work caught London's eye. Ronyel heads to the prestigious Gasworks residency, exploring Philippine organic materials in a global stage. 🌏

To visit Caohagan Island, the HALA crew boarded a small, frail pump boat.

Sea spray splashed on our writer's face. The photographer shielded her gear. We passed island after island and asked the boatman, “Is this Caohagan?” only for us to drive past each one. The waves were so rough the boat almost keeled over.

The journey to and from Caohagan is not always smooth, which can make it difficult for the quilters to display their crafts in the mainland. This was 10 months ago.

This November, the Caohagan quilts found a home in the HoliCOW Gallery-Store at Atua Midtown. The quilts are available for purchase and pre-orders so you no longer have to brave the seas to appreciate them.

HALA, naa na gyud! 💥 We loved the creative energy at the HALA x Atua Midtown Launch! Thank you to everyone who shared their energy and support. We are constantly in awe of Cebuano creators and creatives who showcased their original content, talent, and passion.

We aim to archive the emerging and share stories from the Cebuano art and design community to the rest of the Philippines (and maybe even, crossing fingers, the world).

We said it during the launch and'll echo it here: we hope you make HALA Art and Design Folio your own. We hope you can co-create with us for the second edition.📓 Send us a message if you have something to share. Because after all, "These are our stories. This is our scene."

Daghang salamat to everyone involved in the launch! This is just the start. Until next time!

Can't wait to see what's happening at the Hala Launch x Atua Midtown Block Party.

We have an open mic session from 9 to 12 PM for creative groups to do poetry readings, skits, rengas, and all types of performances. Send us a message if you want a slot.
