“Coach, hindi muna ako babalik ng Davao sa loob ng mga limang taon… gusto ko munang yumaman at iahon ang aking pamilya sa kahirapan.” 🥺🥺🥺
He was only 19.💔
Rene Clert Baterbonia was supposed to be living the dream — a Palarong Pambansa MVP, a rising basketball star from Ateneo de Davao, and a young athlete preparing to wear the Blue Eagles jersey in the UAAP. His story was only beginning.
But in a heartbreaking turn of fate, the future he worked so hard for ended far too soon.
During a team-building activity in Aurora, Rene lost his life in a drowning incident alongside fellow student-athlete Divine Adili. He was only 19 years old.
What makes this tragedy even more painful is how full of promise his life was. Somewhere, there is a jersey that will never be worn in an official game. A dream that will never reach center court. Teammates who will forever remember the friend who should have been beside them.
But beyond basketball, this loss is deeply personal.
A family lost a son.
Friends lost a brother.
A young man’s dreams were taken too soon.
Rene’s name was meant to be heard in packed arenas and championship moments. Instead, it now echoes through tributes, prayers, and grief.
Some stories end after the final buzzer.🥺
His ended before the game even began.
Rest in peace, Rene. 🕊️
Your story may have ended too soon, but you will never be forgotten.
