Filming Fundamentals for Interviews
After almost two decades of lighting and filming interviews, I am still learning with every shoot. The fundamentals always matter—never miss them.
Prioritize Clear Audio
Audio quality is more important than video quality in interviews. Use a lavalier or directional microphone whenever possible, position it close to the subject, and minimize background noise. Poor audio will undermine even well-shot footage.
Use Simple, Consistent Lighting
Ensure the subject’s face is well-lit and evenly illuminated. Place the key light slightly off to one side at eye level, avoid harsh overhead lighting, and never position the subject with a bright light or window directly behind them unless intentionally backlighting.
Frame the Shot Correctly
Follow basic composition rules: position the subject using the rule of thirds, leave appropriate headroom, and have the subject look slightly off-camera toward the interviewer. Lock the camera on a tripod to avoid unnecessary movement and distractions.
