Onion Pepper Beef Stir-Fry Recipe
This recipe yields a flavorful and quick weeknight meal.
Ingredients:
- 1 lb beef sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce (optional, adds richness)
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Optional garnishes: chopped green onions, sesame seeds
Instructions:
1. Marinate the beef: In a bowl, combine the sliced beef with 1 tablespoon of soy sauce, 1/2 teaspoon of cornstarch, and half of the minced garlic. Let it marinate for at least 15 minutes. This tenderizes the beef and adds flavor.
2. Prepare the sauce: In a separate small bowl, whisk together the remaining soy sauce, oyster sauce (if using), cornstarch, and remaining minced garlic and ground ginger. Set aside.
3. Stir-fry: Heat the vegetable oil in a wok or large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the marinated beef and stir-fry until browned, about 3-5 minutes. Remove the beef from the wok and set aside.
4. Sauté vegetables: Add the sliced onions and green bell pepper to the wok and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until slightly softened.
5. Combine and simmer: Return the beef to the wok. Pour the prepared sauce over the beef and vegetables. Stir well to coat everything evenly. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 2-3 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened and the beef is cooked through.
6. Finish and serve: Remove from heat and stir in the sesame oil. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds (optional) before serving. Serve hot with steamed rice.
Tips and Variations:
- For a spicier dish, add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a dash of chili garlic sauce to the sauce.
- Feel free to add other vegetables, such as carrots, broccoli, or mushrooms.
- If you don't have oyster sauce, you can substitute it with hoisin sauce or a combination of soy sauce and brown sugar.
- For a thicker sauce, use a little more cornstarch.
- To make this dish ahead of time, prepare the sauce and marinate the beef. Store separately in the refrigerator. Stir-fry just before serving.
