One thing people don’t always see about cancer and chemotherapy is how hard the side effects can be not just physically, but emotionally and mentally.
Yes, we smile.
Yes, we show up.
Yes, we try to act normal.
But behind closed doors, many of us are fighting battles no one can see.
There are days when the pain is overwhelming. Days when our bodies feel weak, our emotions feel fragile, and even the smallest things can make us cry, become irritated, or withdraw from everyone around us.
Personally, when I feel this way, I choose to stay inside my room.
Not because I don’t appreciate the love and support around me.
I hide because I don’t want others to see how much I’m struggling.
I hide because I don’t want to hurt anyone with my reactions when I’m not feeling like myself.
I hide because I don’t want people to see my pain.
And if I’m being honest, there are moments when I worry that if people see me at my lowest, they might think I’m not strong enough to fight this battle.
So I keep my tears to myself.
I keep my fears to myself.
And I try my best to carry on with a smile.
The truth is, cancer changes you.
Chemotherapy changes you.
It tests not only your body, but also your mind, your emotions, and your spirit.
Sometimes we become quiet not because we’re angry.
Sometimes we become distant not because we don’t care.
Sometimes we choose to be alone because we’re simply trying to survive the day.
And sometimes, the strongest thing we do is quietly survive another day.
So if you know someone going through cancer treatment, please be patient with them. Sometimes they’re not angry. Sometimes they’re not avoiding you.
Sometimes they’re just doing their best to manage the pain that no one else can see.
And to my fellow cancer warriors: I see you. I understand you. And I’m proud of you for making it through another day.
We may not always look strong, but every day we choose to keep going is proof of just how strong we truly are. 💖
