By Miguel Flores

Ms. Atasha Faye Maggay, a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) graduate from UST Senior High School Batch 2025, brought pride to the Philippines after winning multiple medals at a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)-affiliated training program held in Houston, Texas, in June.
Maggay was one of 15 Filipino delegates selected to join the International Space School Program at the NASA Johnson Space Center. She placed second overall among participants from various countries.

According to the Sangguniang Kabataan Federation of PeΓ±ablanca in Cagayan, Maggay topped the Martian Habitat Challenge and Robotics Cryogenic Challenge. She also secured second place in the Lunar Habitat Challenge, Rocketry, and Endothermic Challenge, and finished third in the Coding Challenge.

Aside from the competitions, participants took part in astronaut-style training, engineering simulations, and mentorship sessions with NASA experts, including U.S. Army Col. William McArthur, a veteran astronaut.

Catholic schools, private educators reject proposal to abolish senior high

by Christian Florenz Dumon

Catholic schools and private education groups have rejected calls to scrap senior high school (SHS), calling the move β€œdangerously shortsighted,” Wednesday, July 10. In a joint Facebook statement, the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP) and the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines-Episcopal Commission on Catechesis and Catholic Education said removing SHS would undo years of reforms and hurt student readiness for college and work.

The proposal, authored by Sen. Jinggoy Estrada under Senate Bill 2021, seeks to revert to a 10-year basic education cycle. But the Philippine Business for Education (PBEd), in a separate post, said abolishing SHS is not the answer. PBEd urged lawmakers to fix implementation gaps, noting that SHS has expanded access to quality education through vouchers and partnerships.

CEAP Executive Director Jose Allan Arellano warned that abolishing SHS would waste infrastructure investments and displace thousands of trained teachers, including those in large programs like the University of Santo Tomas Senior High School. With over 7,000 students enrolled, UST-SHS stands as one of the country’s biggest SHS providers. CEAP and PBEd emphasized that reforms should strengthen, not dismantle, existing programs that serve as critical pathways to college and employment.

UST SHS honors artistic and academic excellence of MAD educators

By Marlayne Espiritu

Celebrating excellence in both artistry and academic pursuit, the University of Santo Tomas Senior High School (UST SHS) proudly recognized two faculty members from the Music, Arts, and Design (MAD) strand, Ms. Kim Christine Fababair and Ms. Noelle Arriola, for recently completing their master’s degrees, as announced through the UST SHS official page on July 6.

Ms. Fababair earned her Master of Arts in Art Studies, specializing in Art Theory and Criticism, from the University of the Philippines Diliman. Meanwhile, Ms. Arriola obtained her Master of Arts in Fine Arts and Design from the Philippine Women’s University.

Their academic achievements not only reflect their commitment to their craft but also serve as an inspiration for the UST SHS community, especially aspiring artists and educators. Such achievements enhance the quality of education they provide to UST SHS students through the extensive knowledge and expertise they have acquired.

UST SHS adopts new DepEd curriculum, scraps strands for elective clusters

By Patricia Hernandez

University of Santo Tomas Senior High School (UST SHS) will begin implementing the Department of Education’s (DepEd) Strengthened Senior High School Curriculum in the upcoming A.Y. 2025-2026, joining more than 800 pilot schools nationwide.

The revised program reduces core subjects and replaces academic strands with elective clusters, offering students more flexibility in preparing for college or careers. UST was selected based on its available facilities, qualified teaching staff, and variety of electives. Other Manila-based schools tapped for the rollout include De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde SHS, Jose Abad Santos SHS, Nazareth School of National University, Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic School, and the National Teachers College.

Under the new setup, the four existing SHS tracks will be streamlined into two: Academic and Technical-Professional (TechPro). Core subjects will be trimmed from fifteen to five: Effective Communication, General Mathematics, General Science, Life and Career Skills, and Pag-aaral ng Kasaysayan at Lipunang Pilipino, where students are granted their ability to choose electives from subject clusters instead of being confined to traditional strands.

Despite the structural shift, UST SHS Principal Assoc. Prof. Mary Erika BolaΓ±os said the school will continue offering its current strands. However, with the Physical Education and Sports (PES) strand no longer listed in the new curriculum, it is now referred to as Sports, Health, and Wellness under the Academic track. β€œThe integrity of our strands and tracks will be preserved. We are offering pathways to their chosen career or tertiary program, providing electives that are helpful for them,” she said in a statement published on the university’s website, as the new curriculum will apply to Grade 11 students only, as stated in DepEd Memorandum No. 048, s. 2025.
