This is a clip of my kids having a meltdown. It’s actually very rare for them to cry or throw tantrums in public even in toy sections at malls, they don’t usually act out even when they really want something.
I teach them not to suppress their emotions, but to process and regulate them. At the same time, I can’t deny that it still gives me anxiety, thinking someone nearby might get annoyed when they start crying.
I remind them to regulate their emotions, but also accept that they are still kids. Most of the time, they’re well-behaved, sometimes not, especially when they’re excited, tired, or overwhelmed.
I hope this generation stops setting standards that are too high for children. We talk about breaking people-pleasing tendencies, yet we sometimes expect kids to have complete emotional control.
Let’s raise mindful and considerate children without taking away their right to feel and express emotions. And let’s not judge parents based on the few minutes we see them handling a crying child.
It costs zero to be kind
