In a conference with over 500 circular economy experts, many were baffled and unable to identify a shampoo sachet. Yes, the plastic sachet that any Filipino would recognize. After all, 164 million of them are used every single day in the Philippines.

Anna Reyes, my co-founder and executive director at Sustina, brought a plastic sachet to display during her talk for the “Asia’s Voices” session of the Asia Pacific Circular Economy Roundtable & Hotspot (APCER) in Taiwan. “Is that a free sample?” people asked. “No, this is the product,” Anna replied, to their disbelief.

I would describe the IUCN World Conservation Congress as the FIFA or World Expo of environment conservation—a rare gathering held only once every four years and hosted by a different country each time. This October, more than 10,000 participants came together in Abu Dhabi and online to join the much-awaited congress.

It was heartwarming to see old friends and mentors who continue to light the way for many of us: Atty. Tony Oposa, tireless advocate for Philippine environmental law; Carlos Manuel Rodriguez, CEO of the Global Environment Facility and former Costa Rican environment minister; and the inspiring PANORAMA–IUCN team, who continue to connect communities solving real-world challenges.

Filinvest City’s lush parks and scenic waterways are more than just beautiful landscapes—they form a quiet yet vital system that helps protect the city from flooding. Recently, Filinvest City began dredging works at the Water Garden as part of its ongoing efforts to rehabilitate and maintain its natural waterways. The project is a regular part of the city’s long-term care program to keep its landscapes resilient and its environment in balance with the surrounding urban setting.

Dredging involves the careful removal of natural buildup along the riverbed to restore depth and support steady water movement. During dredging, the water level may appear lower or sections of the riverbed may be visible—an expected and temporary stage that allows teams to safely refresh the waterway. Once complete, the river returns to its normal level.

We all have our own teacher stories. These are the moments of encouragement, lessons we never forget, words of patience, and wisdom passed down with care. That is why teachers will always hold a special place in our hearts. In the Philippines, educators are deeply respected for their resilience, creativity, and the cultural wisdom they share in their profession. They shape not only our minds, but our lives.

On October 25, the Meralco Theater will come alive with cheers, music and heartfelt tributes as the Gabay Guro Grand Gathering 2025 marks its 18th year of championing Filipino educators. With the theme, "Empowering Educators for a Sustainable Future", this celebration honors teachers as heroes of learning and architects of resilience.

In the Japanese coastal city of Fukuoka, the natural mix of saltwater and freshwater is being harnessed to produce renewable energy. The country has unveiled its first so-called “osmotic” power facility, which, according to The Renewable Energy Institute’s website, can generate around 880,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. It is only the second facility of its kind in the world, following a similar one in Denmark that was introduced in 2023.

In “Japan’s First Osmotic Power Plant: What It Means for Clean Energy,” the organization explains that salinity gradient power generation "positions seawater and freshwater on opposite sides of a specially designed membrane, with the seawater kept under mild pressure. As freshwater moves across into the saltier side, the volume of pressurized liquid grows, creating energy that can be captured.” The resulting pressure builds up, drives water through a turbine, which a generator converts into usable electricity.

🥥 MIX YOUR CAUSE WITH MY COCONUT 🥥 MILKY MILKY COCONUT 🥥

Filipino-American rapper and Black Eyed Peas founding member apl.de.ap has officially started his "100 Million Coconut Trees for the Climate" project.

According to the artist, the project started when he found out about soil degradation and its dangers during the pandemic, as well as how coconut could help in that.

Every time we bite into a juicy burger, do we ever stop to think how lucky we are that we are not one of the millions who go to bed hungry? It's ironic, isn't it? While so many struggle to find their next meal, the world continues to battle the problem of food waste.

In the Philippines, households are the biggest contributors to this issue. According to the 2024 Food Waste Index Report by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), Filipino households throw away approximately 2.95 million metric tons of food each year, with rice being the most discarded item. That is food that could have fed millions.

When we talk about the future of clean energy, batteries often don’t get the same spotlight as solar panels or wind farms. But at the 3rd ASEAN Battery Technology Conference (ABTC) in Phuket, Thailand, it became clear: batteries are fast becoming the backbone of ASEAN’s clean energy ambitions.

Hosted by Hioki E.E. Corporation, a Japan-based global leader in electrical measuring instruments, the conference gathered policymakers, engineers, researchers, and industry stakeholders to discuss something deceptively simple yet immensely powerful: better batteries mean a more sustainable ASEAN.
