Here’s why this approach works and why it’s so important to stick with it: When a child learns that whining gets them what they want—even just a reaction, a sigh, or a delayed “fine”—it becomes their go-to tool because it’s effective.

By calmly saying, “I can’t understand whining, try your big-kid voice,” you’re not ignoring your child; you’re simply drawing a clear, kind line in the sand.

You are teaching them that their normal, natural voice is the only one that opens doors, while the whiny tone is like a locked door that gets no response.
