: Sa unang pagwagayway ng watawat pagkatapos ng digmaan sa Alapan noong taong 1898, nasaksihan ang bakas ng matapang at malawakang paninindigan ng sambayanang Pilipino laban sa katiwaliang nagkait ng isang mapagpalayang kinabukasan.

Bagama’t pansamantalang nahinto ang himagsikan dahil sa Kasunduan sa Biak-na-Bato na nagpatalsik sa mga lider ng rebolusyon, hindi tumigil ang puwersa ng mga Pilipino sa patuloy na paghamon sa katiwaliang namamayani sa sariling bayan. Sa pagbabalik ni Emilio Aguinaldo, mas lalong sumiklab ang patriyotismo sa bawat isa, na naging daan upang makamit ang kasarinlan ng Pilipinas.

Gayunpaman, hindi natapos sa Alapan ang mga hamong kinahaharap ng bansa; hanggang sa kasalukuyan, patuloy ang mga hakbang laban sa katiwalian. Katulad ng mga protestang naganap laban sa korapsiyon, pang-aabuso, paglabag sa hustisya, at pagyurak sa mga karapatan.

Patuloy mang sinisikap na patahimikin ang mga mamamayan, hindi ito naging hadlang sa kanilang patuloy na paghahangad ng kaayusan at pagbabago.

Sa paggunita ng ika-128 anibersaryo sa labanang nagpalaya ng bansa mula sa katiwalian, nawa’y bitbitin ng bawat Pilipino sa kasalukuyan ang aral ng pagtindig at pagboses para sa pagbabago.

There is an old belief that when two people are destined to love each other, the heavens grow careless and shape them with similar hands. Not enough for mothers to mistake one for the other in crowded streets, but enough for the world to feel briefly unsettled whenever they stand side by side.

Enough for strangers to look twice. Enough for mirrors to hesitate.

I did not believe this at first. The world, after all, is full of repetitions. Cathedrals echo one another across countries that they have never met. The rain drizzles again each June dressed in the same mourning gray. Even grief has a familiar face regardless of who carries it. So when people pointed out there were pieces of you in my smile, I dismissed it as coincidence.

But then I began noticing the smaller things — the way both of us pause before answering difficult questions, with the peculiar habit of staring too long at departing trains. There are moments with you that feel less like meeting someone new and more like rediscovering something misplaced in my childhood. Sometimes, when you look at me for too long, I feel as though my reflection has escaped every mirror I have ever known just to stand in front of me, breathing.

The gods, perhaps, are not architects of precision but creatures of longing themselves. And so, when they adore a pair of souls too much, they forget to make them entirely different.

You and I are molded as if we were written from the same draft before we were ever born — two verses separated into different poems, two pieces of dusk carrying identical shades of blue. And ever since, heaven has spent generations trying to correct its own mistake by allowing fragments of your shadow to embody my human flesh.

There are nights I think about the gods watching us from somewhere beyond the stars, smiling quietly to themselves at the sight of two familiar faces finally standing before one another after lifetimes of near encounters and almosts.

All this time, they had been imitating your eyes in my own, my sorrow in yours, leaving small traces for us to follow until I would finally look at you and understand why my soul always felt incomplete in solitude.

It was the gods, in all their infinite yearning, making the same soul twice — and waiting patiently for the day both versions found their way back to each other.

: Nakatirik ang araw, tumataginting ang makina ng mga kotse, at mainit ang simoy ng hangin. Sa isip ni Sierra, ngayon ang perfect time para ilabas ang cutout ng kaniyang idol.

Habang kinakaladkad niya ang taong cardboard sa sidewalk, may boses na pumigil sa kaniya.

“Ma’am Sierra, totoo po bang hinagisan mo ng laptop ang employee mo?”

She rolls her eyes habang inaakbayan ang cutout, “Ito na naman tayo, eh! Mga chismis at paninira as always. Uulitin ko po, hindi po ako pro-China.”

Bumitin sa hangin ang kaguluhan ng kaniyang mga salita, “Hindi naman ako marunong mag-laptop, saan niyo ba nakukuha ‘yang mga ganiyang isyu?”

Tumango na lamang ang reporter, subalit sinubukan ulit niyang mas alamin ang totoong sagot ni Sierra, “Ma’am, pero tinapon niy—“

She cuts him off, “Para maganda ang quality ko sa calls, siyempre, gumagamit ako ng laptop. Pero hindi talaga ako maalam dito, eh… Hindi nga afford ng company ko na ibili ako ng gusto kong laptop, kaya ako bumili nitong laptop… Shhh… secret na lang natin.”

Napataas ang kilay ng reporter sa pagkindat ni Sierra.

“Ahhh… ganun po ba, Ma’am?” siguro’y dala ng init at stress, hindi na lang sana niya ipagpapatuloy ang interview. Ngunit bago niya patayin ang camera, nagsalita ulit si Sierra. Bumalik sa reporter ang spark of hope na baka may connect na ang sunod niyang sasabihin.

“Pero ang mahal nga rin ng laptop na ito. ‘Pag may files, pinapagawa ko na lang sa katrabaho ko,” tumingin siya sa likod at nginitian ang cutout. Deep down, kahit cardboard lang ang tatay niya, alam niyang proud ito sa kaniya kahit ‘di siya marunong mag-laptop. Agad niya itong hinatak sa kaniyang tabi, niyakap nang mahigpit, at nagpatuloy sa pagsasalita.

Ngumiti na lamang ang reporter at nagpasalamat bago pa mas tumagal ang engkuwentrong ito.

Hindi man natin malalaman ang totoong nais sabihin ni Sierra, at least alam natin na hindi siya marunong mag-laptop. Kaya siya’y maturuan na sana. Hindi natin alam, baka siya na ang maging sunod na secretary ng DepEd — o kaya nama’y maging sunod na bise presidente?

The world is full of possibilities, and minsan, nandiyan lang sila sa likod — nagmamasid at naka-print.
