Celebrating Excellence in Children’s Literature: The 2025 Severino Reyes Medal Awarding Ceremonies

MANILA, Philippines — May 21, 2025

In a celebration of creativity, cultural heritage, and the power of storytelling for young readers, the 2025 Severino Reyes Medal Awarding Ceremonies will be held on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at 3:00 PM at the National Library of the Philippines in Manila. This year’s event recognizes the most outstanding works in Philippine children’s literature, affirming the nation’s commitment to nurturing a reading culture among the youth.

The Severino Reyes Medal, named after the beloved Filipino writer, playwright, and children’s storyteller known as “Lola Basyang,” honors authors, illustrators, and publishers whose works exemplify excellence, relevance, and innovation in creating books for Filipino children.

A collaborative effort among several key institutions, the awarding ceremonies are presented by IBBY Philippines, the National Library of the Philippines, the National Book Development Board (NBDB), and prominent professional organizations such as the Philippine Librarians Association, Inc. (PLAI), the Association of Librarians in the Public Sector (ALPS), and the Philippine Association of School Librarians, Inc. (PASLI).

PASLI, in particular, has played an active role in this year’s selection process and programming, drawing from its extensive network of educators and school librarians to ensure that the winning titles meet the developmental, emotional, and cultural needs of Filipino learners.

“This award is not just a celebration of artistic merit—it is also a reflection of our deepening literacy advocacy and our belief that every Filipino child deserves access to meaningful, high-quality literature,” said a PASLI representative. “We are proud to stand with fellow organizations in uplifting books that enrich the lives of young readers and inspire future generations.”

The event will gather educators, librarians, publishers, authors, and advocates of children’s literature, with guests encouraged to wear Filipiniana attire in honor of our literary heritage.
