Goyo: The Boy General tells the story of Gregorio "Goyo" del Pilar, a young and charming general who becomes a national hero during the Philippine-American War. After the death of the fierce General Luna, Goyo steps into the spotlight, but he soon finds that being a hero isn’t as simple as people think. The movie shows his inner struggles—balancing pride, loyalty, and responsibility—while facing the harsh realities of war. In the end, Goyo's bravery leads him to a tragic but honorable death at Tirad Pass. It’s a powerful story about growing up, facing truth, and what it really means to be a hero.

Erik Matti's BuyBust is a visually striking and ambitious action film set against the backdrop of President Duterte’s war on drugs in the Philippines. The film, two years in the making, focuses heavily on style and action, though it falls short in character development and depth of social commentary.

The story follows an anti-drug enforcement team carrying out a major operation in the slums of Manila. It attempts to explore the issue of extrajudicial killings and the broader impact of the drug war, raising the question: “Is it the system or is it us?” While the film presents a fictionalized and exaggerated version of reality, its core message is clear—even if the ex*****on sometimes falters.

Despite the rarity of large-scale action films in Philippine cinema due to budget constraints, BuyBust stands out for its intense, hour-long action sequences reminiscent of Mad Max: Fury Road. However, the focus on spectacle often overshadows the human element. The PDEA team lacks depth, making it difficult for the audience to connect emotionally with the characters or care about their fates. For example, the deaths of married agents Alda (Sheenly Gener) and Bernie (Victor Neri) could have been more impactful with better character development.

The depiction of the urban poor caught in the conflict also feels underdeveloped. Rather than being portrayed as individuals with agency, they often serve as background to the action, leaving their motivations and struggles ambiguous.

While BuyBust succeeds in creating tension and visual excitement, it misses opportunities to fully explore its themes. Its strongest moments are the quieter, more reflective scenes, which hint at the potential for a more nuanced and resonant film.

Set in the years following the American Civil War, The Last Samurai takes place during Japan's Meiji Restoration—a pivotal era when the nation transitioned from Shogunate rule back to Imperial authority. Under Emperor Meiji's leadership, Japan sought rapid modernization, enlisting foreign experts to develop its industry, infrastructure, and military. The film follows the fictional journey of American Army Captain Nathan Algren (played by Tom Cruise), who becomes entangled in the cultural and political shifts of the time. His experience mirrors the fate of the Samurai, a warrior class increasingly rendered obsolete in the face of modernization.

The film is noted for its attention to historical accuracy, particularly in the depiction of weapons, armor, and period customs. Sword fighting choreography is a standout feature, praised for its realism and intensity. Tom Cruise delivers a strong performance, although Ken Watanabe—portraying a Samurai leader—often commands the screen with a nuanced and powerful presence.

Visually stunning and thoughtfully executed, the film appeals to viewers with an interest in history, Japanese culture, or martial arts. It incorporates culturally specific details—such as the meaning behind different types of bows or the significance of seppuku—which may be especially appreciated by those familiar with Japanese traditions. While not intended as a family film due to its mature themes and violence, The Last Samurai is widely regarded as worth watching multiple times.

Film Review: Young Adult Matters (2020)

Young Adult Matters, directed by Lee Hwan, dives into the complex world of youth struggles, focusing on Se-jin, a high school student facing trauma, self-harm, and an unwanted pregnancy.

The film brings forward themes of identity, societal pressures, and the search for independence, often touching on uncomfortable topics like abortion and relationships.

The movie is noted for its bold portrayal of issues that affect today's youth, though some viewers find the narrative a bit disjointed. The cinematography stands out, blending dark themes with moments of visual beauty, capturing the emotional depth of the characters.

While the film's raw and daring approach to these sensitive topics may not resonate with everyone, it’s an important conversation starter about the challenges facing modern adolescents.

Young Adult Matters is a thought-provoking, if imperfect, exploration of youth in today's world, and worth watching for those interested in contemporary, bold storytelling.

MOVIE REVIEW: Sampung Utos kay Josh
Wild, witty, and wickedly bold—Sampung Utos kay Josh is a chaotic ride through sin, temptation, and twisted commandments. Not your typical moral story, but definitely one that'll make you laugh, think, and question everything.
Verdict: Thou shalt watch.
