ChatGPT-5 dropped last week with lots of fanfare. I was so excited that when I came into work Friday morning after the announcements I fired up my app and started prompting before realizing that I didn’t have access yet and would have to wait. Once it did get going, I felt, I don’t know, -whelmed isn’t exactly a word, but if it were, that’s what I would use to describe it.

That’s the real problem of the ChatGPT-5 release. For the casual and regular user, it’s just another model release and it isn’t something people pay that much attention to. Most users on free plans don’t even play around with which model they are using. There’s a lot of power under the hood even in previous models, and often that power has gone untapped.

We’ve all been told that AI and automation are going to fundamentally change the workforce and the nature of jobs. If almost every other class of worker and industry is being told, “Adapt or die,” the messaging for people in the arts is, “we can’t wait to get rid of you.” Copy writers report losing work already. As do graphic artists. Throw a digital stone and you’ll hit someone on the internet either claiming that we won’t need artists anymore, or that they are artists themselves, thanks to diffusion models. Theater, film, voice actors, musicians, are all feeling threatened.

Artists from different disciplines, teachers, and policy advocates convened on the first of August to begin discussions that will lead to policies that not only protect artists and their creative works, but advance opportunities for artists as we move into an AI-powered world. The discussion was titled “Art in the Age of Algorithms: A Policy Dialogue on AI and the Creative Industries and Culture and Arts” and convened by the University of the Philippines National College of Public Administration and Governance (UP NCPAG) through the Governance Reform, Innovation, and Transformation Research Laboratories (GRIT Labs) and the Center for Policy and Executive Development (CPED)

Have you tried talking to your voice assistant in Taglish and getting a headscratching response? Yeah. We’ve all been through that. If it’s only Tagalog and English–especially in English–things might have been simpler.

But the Philippines is a home to many languages plus dialects. This means variety and complexity that can be challenging to train for AI. So voice assistants, while they have been improving, have felt like they had a long way to go. That may change soon.

On August 7, HUAWEI shut down the BGC Arts Center to show out its Pura 80 Series. Filling the venue with fashion-forward celebrities and tastemakers, HUAWEI used the opportunity to define the style and air of sophistication it aims to convey with its new product line.

The Pura 80 series boasts a long list of spec and improvement, in comparison to both its own 70 series as well as its competitors on the market. But honestly, all those numbers don’t do the phone justice. With all the upgrades and technical improvements it’s easy to get lost in the list.
