The scanner used for the FIRST CLINICAL CT SCAN
On October 1, 1971, the first clinical CT scan of a patient was performed at Atkinson Morley’s Hospital in London using a revolutionary brain scanner developed by British engineer Godfrey Hounsfield.
But did you know what that pioneering machine was called? 👀
It was the EMI CT Brain Scanner — developed at EMI, the same British company famous for its involvement in the music industry. 🎵➡️🧠
The first patient was a woman suspected of having a brain tumor. The scan revealed a cystic frontal-lobe lesion, demonstrating the extraordinary potential of computer-assisted X-ray imaging.
That breakthrough helped usher medicine into the era of Computed Tomography. ✨
Years later, Hounsfield shared the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Allan Cormack for the development of computer-assisted tomography.
