For many people, it's just a joke, a tease, or a casual remark. But for countless gay individuals, words like "bakla," "bading," "salot," "sissy," "parlorista," and other labels have been used not as descriptions, but as weapons.

Many LGBTQ+ people grow up hearing euphemisms and coded words used to avoid saying who they are directly. Others hear insults disguised as humor every day—from the classroom, the workplace, the streets, social media, and sometimes even from their own families.

What many fail to realize is that words leave marks. A comment that lasts a few seconds can linger in someone's mind for years.

Being gay is not an insult. Being different is not a weakness. Being authentic is not something to be ashamed of.

This Pride Month, let's be mindful of the language we use. Let's stop turning identities into punchlines. Respect begins with the words we choose.
