THE Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum won’t be having its regular Tuesday session for the next three weeks starting Oct. 14 to give way to the hosting and coverages of several sports events.

The public sports program is deferring its session for Oct. 14 as the PBA Press Corps holds its 31st annual Awards Night a day before, while the next two Tuesdays (Oct. 21 and 28) will also be skipped in favor of the 2025 Batang Pinoy in GenSan and the 3rd Asian Youth Games in Bahrain.

TENNIS sensation Alex Eala captured her breakthrough WTA singles title and served as anchor as Philippine athletes made it a ‘September to remember.’

On a high from her milestone first-round victory at the US Open main draw in August, Eala followed up with her maiden championship run at the Guadalajara 125 Open in Mexico.

The 20-year-old ace fought with much intensity and passion all the way through, sealing it with a searing comeback from a set down to beat Hungary’s Panna Udvardy, 1-6, 7-5, 6-3.

With her exploits, Eala smashed her way to the top of the Philippine Sportswriters Association’s roster of achievers for the ninth month of 2025.

Aside from the elite netter, pole vaulter EJ Obiena, the Alas Pilipinas Men, darter Lovely Mae ‘Bebang’ Orbeta, and pickleball player Bambi Zoleta produced noteworthy performances in the other fronts.

Obiena helped stage a world-class street pole vault event, the Atletang Ayala World Pole Vault Challenge at the Ayala Triangle, and gave Pinoy fans a complete treat by beating his foreign rivals for the gold with his season’s best 5.80 meters.

Alas spiked its stint in the FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championship at home with a massive upset of No. 21 Egypt, 29-27, 23-25, 25-22, 25-21. It was the country's first-ever win in the global meet and Alas nearly made more history but lost to No. 14 Iran, 25-21, 21-25, 25-17, 23-25, 20-22, in a close battle for a Last-16 berth.

Writing history for Philippine darts, Orbeta hit the bull’s eye at the World Darts Federation (WDF) World Cup in Gyeonggi-do, Korea, capping an exceptional run with a dominant 7-2 victory over seasoned American Paula Murphy in the finale.

A decorated soft tennis player, Zoleta showed topnotch skills in another sport, copping a pair of gold medals at the World Pickleball Championship Tier 5 in Bali. Zoleta beat Indonesian Angie B**g, 21-15, for the tiara in the women’s singles 19+ 4.5 category, and teamed with Patricia Raymundo in overpowering Marine Demol and Mila Yatmi, 21-6, for the doubles mint.

Also making it to the September honor roll were Joseph Arcilla, Samuel Nuguit, Patrick Mendoza, Bien Zoleta, Princess Catindig and Christy Sañosa, who topped the mixed team division of the 9th Asian Soft Tennis Championships in Mungyeong City, Korea, and the Philippine delegation that claimed the Overall Nation Championship Trophy at the FIA Asia Pacific Motorsport Championship in Sri Lanka.

THE Mindanao leg of the 2025 Indigenous Peoples Games will take place in Buenavista, Agusan del Norte on Oct. 11-12.

Close to 300 athletes will see action in the event that showcases traditional games as well as Philippine culture and arts, according to Philippine Sports Commission board member Fritz Gaston.

Organizers, however, are keeping their fingers crossed that the weather would cooperate following the postponement of the Visayas leg that was scheduled last Sept. 27-28 in Iloilo City due to a typhoon.

The PSC, according to Gaston, is still trying to squeeze in the Luzon leg in Ilocos Norte next month or any other window between the Batang Pinoy in General Santos City later this month and the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand in December.

“The people of Agusan del Norte are very excited. To them, this is a very huge event. The delegations will start arriving in Buenavista tomorrow,” Gaston told the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum Tuesday at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex conference room.

Buenavista Mayor Joselito Roble and Agusan de Norte Gov. Maria Angelica Rosedell Amante have ensured a successful hosting of the yearly event.

PSC commissioner Ed Hayco will also grace the opening.

Gaston told the forum presented by San Miguel Corporation, Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee, MILO, Smart/PLDT, and the country’s 24/7 sports app ArenaPlus that aside from medals and minimal cash rewards, the event is all about the ‘camaraderie and competitiveness’ among the indigenous people.

The cities and municipalities fielding bets are Nasipit, Las Nieves, Buenavista, Cabadbaran City, Carmen, Jabonga, Tubay, Santiago, Kitcharao, Remedio T. Romualdez (RTR) and Butuan City.

They will vie in events like pintik (arrow), bangkaw (javelin), bag-ud, sudsud (female), takyang (female), indigenous race, tug-of-war, fire making, lubok-humay and unahik/palosebo/katkat kawayan.

THE Wushu Federation of the Philippines is hitting two birds with one stone.

The country is set to host two major wushu events in back-to-back fashion – the World Wushu Championships and the Asian Wushu Championships in 2027 and 2028, respectively.

Officials of the association led by its president Freddie Jalasco and secretary general Julian Camacho made the announcement on Tuesday in the Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum at the conference hall of the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.

World Wushu Championships silver medal winner Carlos Baylon Jr. was with Jalasco and Camacho in the weekly session presented by San Miguel Corporation, Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee, MILO, Smart/PLDT, and the country’s 24/7 sports app ArenaPlus.

Camacho bared that since the country is hosting the world meet in 2027, the Wushu Federation of Asia suggested for the Philippines to stage the Asian counterpart of the tournament as well a year after.

“Kinausap ako ng Wushu Federation of Asia, sabi nila since mag-host naman kayo ng 2027 World Championships, baka puwede na kayo mag host next year ng Asian Championships. So back-to-back ito. Sabi ko, OK,” Camacho said in the public sports program.

“Since nandiyan na rin naman lahat ng equipment (taolu carpet, sanda ring, scoring machine), we can make use of that with only a few months apart (of the two hosting).”

But focus will be on the World Championship first, according to Jalasco, as the Philippines is eyeing a P500 million budget to mount the event featuring 80 countries and more than 2,000 participants competing in both the taolu and sanda events.

The federation is in talks with the SMX Mall of Asia as venue of the event.

“Magsisimula na kami ng aming mobilization by early next year. So we have to prepare everything to ensure the success of our hosting, kasi napakalaking event nito,” said Jalasco.

The Philippines was actually scheduled to host the event in 2029 yet as Macau is the one assigned for the 2027 staging.

But Camacho opted to talk to Macau and switch the hosting assignments instead.

“Sabi ko kasi I’m 82 now baka hindi na ako umabot ng 2029,” said a smiling Camacho. “We’re friends (Macau) naman. So pumayag, nagpalit tayo ng hosting.”

As for someone who’s expected to perform right before his countrymen, Baylon said he’s ready to take on the challenge and deliver the way he did in the recent World Championships and the World Games earlier, where he won a bronze medal.

“Pagsisikapan po natin sa training para makakuha tayo ng gold,” said Baylon, who competes in the men’s sanda 56 kg. event. “Medyo may pressure sa aming mga atleta dahil tayo ang host, pero ipapakita natin sa ibang countries na malakas tayo.”

THE National Collegiate Athletic Association hopes to pick up from where it left off last year as it ushers its 101st season on Wednesday, Oct. 1, beginning with the centerpiece event of basketball at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Teams which played in last year’s Final Four will have a rematch right away on opening day as defending men’s champion and host school Mapua battles Lyceum and College of St. Benilde clashes with San Beda University.

The Cardinals-Pirates tussle is set at 2:30 p.m. followed by the Blazers-Red Lions match at 5 p.m.

An elaborate opening ceremony starting at 12 noon precedes the doubleheader, with performances to be provided by songstress Thea Astley, Hannah Precillas, Naya Ambi, and Ms. Aicelle Santos.

Philippine Sports Commission Chairman Patrick ‘Pato’ Gregorio will serve as guest speaker when the country’s grand old collegiate league ushers its next 100 years.

“Madaling tandaan. Season 101. And we’ll open on October 1. 10-1. So things like that. And with this year’s theme ‘Building Greatness,’ I’m sure for the past 100 years of NCAA, you’ve seen student-athletes rose to the elite level. So in the next 100 years in coordination with the PSC and member schools, we hope to sustain our contribution to the national training pool,” said Jose Rizal University athletic director Paul Supan in Tuesday’s Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.

Emilio Aguinaldo College Vice President for Administration Dr. Lorenzo Lorenzo appeared with Supan in the session presented by San Miguel Corporation, PSC, Philippine Olympic Committee, MILO, Smart/PLDT, and the country’s 24/7 sports app ArenaPlus.

In line with the NCAA’s goal of providing the national training pool with potential members, Lorenzo said the collegiate league is introducing the Olympic sports of gymnastics, weightlifting, boxing, and golf in this year’s calendar of events.

All four sports will initially be demonstration in nature to be played in the second semester.

“The NCAA and PSC ay nagkaroon ng partnership in terms of training and developing these grassroots athletes,” said Lorenzo.

Supan said under NCAA rules a demo sport that has been played for three straight years can be elevated to regular status subject to certain conditions.

Weightlifting and gymnastics provided the three gold medals won by the country in the Olympics, including the breakthrough gold provided by lifter Hidilyn Diaz in the women’s 55 kg category. Incidentally, the 34-year-old Diaz is an alumnus of NCAA member school College of St. Benilde.

New format will also be adopted in the event of basketball, whose games will be played in the NCAAs original home at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

“This is our home and most of us will acknowledge, dito talaga nagsimula ang NCAA,” said Supan, noting the juniors basketball that kicks off on Thursday (Oct. 2) will already be played at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium between Mapua-Lyceum and St. Benilde-San Beda.

“The direction really is to eventually ensure that all of the games in the eliminations and semis, basically, were going back to our home base,” added Lorenzo.

Other sports to be played at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex include taekwondo, swimming, lawn tennis, and hopefully, football, while track and field will be staged at Philsports Arena.
