With comparisons to iconic bands like Joy Division, New Order, and early A Certain Ratio, Real Curses sees The Skeleton Years carving a unique niche within the post-punk revival scene. Darwin's brooding vocals, reminiscent of Joy Division's lan Curtis and White Lies' Tom Smith, add raw emotional depth, while the band's use of vintage-sounding synths and delay-heavy guitar effects channels the atmosphere of pioneers such as Bauhaus, The early Wolfgang Press, and The Cure during their early punk days (notably, the Faith album). Tracks like 'Lost,' 'What Makes Us Weak,' 'I'm Not Like You,' and 'Doom and Gloom' evoke a sense of nostalgia while pushing their sound in new, more refined directions.
