1944-1945
The Philippine guerrilla movement during WWII was one of the most extensive and effective resistance efforts in the entire Pacific Theater. When the U.S. and Philippine Commonwealth forces surrendered in May 1942, thousands of soldiers and civilians refused to lay down their arms, retreating into the jungles and mountains to wage a "hit-and-run" war that lasted until the country's liberation in 1945.

Barbara Perez, famously known as the "Audrey Hepburn of the Philippines," is a legendary actress who became a symbol of elegance and talent during the Golden Age of Philippine cinema. A top star for Sampaguita Pictures, she gained international fame after starring in the 1961 Hollywood film No Man Is an Island, yet she famously turned down a five-year Universal Studios contract to return home and marry the love of her life, actor Robert Arevalo. Throughout her prolific career, she garnered critical acclaim, most notably winning the FAMAS Best Actress award for the masterpiece Ang Daigdig ng mga Api (1965). Beyond her cinematic achievements, she is respected for her enduring 61-year marriage to Arevalo and her seamless transition from a glamorous leading lady to a dignified veteran character actress in both film and television.

Fred Cortes, born Fred Louis Osburn (1921–1964), was a distinguished leading man during the early years of Philippine cinema, particularly recognized for his significant contributions to LVN Pictures. He rose to stardom in 1940 with his debut in Nag-iisang Sangla and quickly became a staple of the studio's golden era. Cortes is perhaps best remembered for his iconic role as Don Juan in the 1941 epic Ibong Adarna, a landmark production that showcased his charm and screen presence. Throughout his career, he formed a popular on-screen partnership with actress Mila del Sol, starring in several pre-war and wartime films such as Angelita and Tia Juana.

Beyond his professional success, Cortes had a notable personal life within the industry, having been married to the legendary actress Anita Linda, with whom he had a son, Fred Cortes Jr. Although the turmoil of World War II interrupted his momentum, he successfully returned to the screen in the early 1950s with films like His Darkest Hour. His legacy remains tied to the transition of Philippine film from the pre-war period to the revitalized post-war industry, marking him as one of the definitive leading men of his generation.
